Shinj seems like he mentally can’t and shouldn’t pilot an Eva or be in the plot. His dad is distant, his mom is dead, and him becoming an Eva pilot gave him more negative than posting effects character development wise. He was put into too many situations where he would get attached to someone than they die or he kills them. He’s constantly ripped from comfort, not heroically, but to the point of mental collapse in general. A lot of people think he has bpd, and as someone who studies psychology and had a friend with bpd, he most likely does (mental instability, bad self image, unstable relationships, etc.). He is also put in a situation where he cannot commit or escape, because of pressure to save others. Oh and also his guardian, the one he should get help from, is harming him.

Also, even though many say kaworu is healthy for shinji, he is not. He selfishly puts himself in situations where he will die and ruin shinji mentally. His love for shinji leans towards impulsive but still positive in a way. If he truly cared, he would have not put shinji in situations where they build trust for eachother than kaworu commits suicide, and it’s always very easy for shinji to think it’s his fault, more than usual.
