I like them pink, a radiant 70s lip gloss frequency that fades through mournful coral to a final, beautiful bleached candyfloss. In the 1980s Maria McElroy began living in Tokyo, starting a lifelong love affair with Japan that would have a profound effect on her art and psyche. The peony, her favourite flower is the symbol of this deep personal passion. • • There is a sense of beckoning gourmand skin with Maria’s @aroma_m_perfume Geisha series; a notion rises of being intoxicated enough to unwrap someone to reach such scented flesh. This cloaked vanilla renders her perfumes narcotic. I have loved Aroma M work ever since a certain Austrian-based @armadilloscookiequeen kindly sent me a luxurious decant of Geisha Noire and I fell hard. I bought a full bottle and one of Geisha Hinoki Vanilla and lost myself in reviewing.• • It is a joy to photograph peonies; they manipulate the air around themselves, spaces between petals lustrous with shadow. I used a frozen peony for this image, a flower I’d carefully stashed in a Ziploc bag. Opening it released the moist scent of sweet, jammy dampness mixed with the chalky brittleness of ice crystals. I have been wearing Geisha Botancontinually for days now, really craving the vanilla and the way it twists and turns, slides from foresty matcha green infusion to seaside ice cream piped into a cone, topped with a chocolate flake.
