I wonder how many
Knew your real name
And who knew why
You had to change
Because the letters
In our language
Say pain
And strength
And I might be angry
That you didn’t try
To save yourself
Or your children
Or me
But I remember
All you did do
And it is enough
Because it has to be
So thank you
Paul et Victor Margueritte, Femmes Nouvelles, E. Flammarion, 1899
So I need to talk about the adaptations of Les Mis by Le Théâtre de la Jeunesse. It’s a French TV show for kids from the 60′s that did adaptations of classics for younger audiences and they did Les Mis three times:
Cosette in 1961 (1h45min)
Gavroche in 1962 (1h52min)
Jean Valjean in 1963 (1h48min)
(So the combined length is about 5h35min but this includes recaps and opening and closing titles.)
These are all super cheaply made and… let’s just say creative. But also pretty amazing when they happen to hit gold. Also in some ways they’re very faithful to the Brick and include a lot of little details that often get left out!
I already posted this clip from Gavroche that gives you a pretty good idea of what to expect. xD Safe to say that it’s pure joy to watch. I REALLY WISH IT WAS SUBTITLED SO ALL OF YOU GUYS COULD ENJOY IT TOO.
Despite the titles, none of these actually focus on a single character. It’s more like the way Hugo named the volumes “Fantine”, “Cosette”, “Marius”, “Jean Valjean” (and the fourth one that doesn’t quite belong :p)
There’s SO MUCH TO TALK ABOUT THO. I might have to do this in multiple posts...
Okay firstly Cosette is like eight already when she arrives in Montfermeil. I think they just wanted to avoid having to hire an extra actress for her as a toddler? But it might also be that they really wanted her to be older so they could have her react to everything more like an older kid. It’s kind of like Shoujo Cosette except in Shoujo Cosette she actually WAS a toddler but acted like she was older.
(Btw I love how they both look SO DONE already. :p I mean I know they’re just tired from walking but they have such “UGH whatever” body language.)
^Ponine and Zelma raiding the cupboard for bread and jam to share with Cosette (before Fantine leaves.) IT’S TOO PRECIOUS.
Unlike Shoujo Cosette though, this Cosette is probably the most defiant child!Cosette that I’ve ever seen!
Mme T. gives Cosette’s coat to Éponine and Cosette is just NOT HAVING IT:
Cosette: But it’s MINE!
Éponine: No, it’s not, because mom said it was for me!
“This is such bullshit”
There’s a scene where Mme T. complains about Cosette forgetting to put salt in their food and IT WAS TOTALLY ON PURPOSE.
Especially because this is the next time she’s cooking:
“YOU WANT SALT? I’LL GIVE YOU SALT”
SHE’S SUCH A LITTLE REBEL AND I LOVE HER.
Okay this is getting long so let’s put a cut here.

Very rough animatic for The Villainz Side. Fully animating the cars will be the bane of my existence.
This is a WIP.
