          We could not deny the fact that most if not all Filipinos one time or the other has experienced being late.  Punctuality is one trait most Filipinos do not possess.  The term “Filipino Time” was coined from Filipinos repeated tardiness which is a total disrespect  of other peoples time.

          Last year both my aunts who has lived in the U.S. for more than 15 years visited the Philippines to attend my cousins wedding.  On several of their dinner invitations to my dad and their other siblings, they always end up being early (meaning on time) while the rest arrived at least an hour late.  After this happened like the third time, my aunt as tactless as she was started scolding everybody and gave a lengthy sermon on the importance of being on time.  The next time they had dinner again the usual – everybody was late except both my aunts.

          My dad who used to work for Yamaichi Electronics a Japanese company told me that in their head office in Japan – being sick is not an excuse to be absent.  Even if your running a 40*C fever you still have to report for work and the HR dept. would then issue a certificate allowing you to go on leave if it is warranted.  Otherwise they would just let you take some medication, rest in the clinic and return back to work after a short nap.  The most difficult part is the commute back home because most Japanese live in the outskirts which is about a 2 hour commute by bullet train.  I believe that is one of the reasons why Japan is so progressive.

          Filipinos are fond of making excuses.  The reason I’m late is because traffic was very heavy, sorry my alarm clock failed to ring  or I was not feeling well this morning.  Excuses, excuses – but the real reason lies on the fact that Filipinos love to sleep. Rip Van Winkle would be considered an amateur compared to Filipinos sleeping habits.

          I admire the policy of most colleges and universities in the Philippines nowadays wherein you are considered dropped from you subject with 3 consecutive absences and 7 days of tardiness.  This would instill discipline to all it’s students and make “Filipino Time” a thing of the past.  The new slogan “Filipino-On-Time” would be the new by-word that would resonate in the far reaches of the world.
