And you’re so right, Nico’s canon catholicism was introduced so late and all of the head canons that emerged before then, especially him being Jewish, have a much deeper root in the fandom and the development of Nico’s character. He’s a character that we knew so little about and the fact that new information is only being added now doesn’t dispel the way that people have previously connected to the character. ESPECIALLY since Rick’s representation of Jewish characters is not great (both canon Jewish characters being children of Hermes).

Idk people connect to characters differently and they see themselves in characters they relate too, that’s what’s so cool about fandom spaces, being able to have different views of a character. The idea that there can be “too many” marginalized identities within a character and that canon information invalidates all (longer established) contradictory head canons is just... no. And the fact that people are upset about Nico being Jewish because it’s not canon but like a week ago, Will Solace wanted to murder Percy Jackson and people were cool with that just feels... icky.

Yep, casual anti-Semitism is the reason for the reason people want to say something (asking a question or for elaboration isn't anti-Semitic but coming in and clearing your throat going "actually-" is)

I also tend to head cannon Nico as Catholic personally, but at the same time I’m in no way opposed Jewish Nico, or Muslim Nico or generally Nico as any other religion. I also see Will as both Jewish and Christian at the same time/interchangeably*... I think that’s weird to some people in fandom, but I think the reason for that is because they are so obsessed with “it has to be canon” or “canon compliant” unless it is specifically stated to be an AU which just... isn’t true...

For example on my blog sometimes when I’m talking about Nico I’m talking about how I see him at 16, other times I see him as like 19, sometimes I’m talking about Nico at 22... The thing with fandom is that all characters are malleable, if we only were taking canon and only canon then fandom would not exist. 

I would like to specifically highlight your last two paragraphs, especially:

While I do describe crying and use the word "tears" a lot, the word cry never actually comes up. Have a long angsty passage anyway, ft. Apollo trying to be a good dad.

Apollo’s hand was suddenly on the wheel, preventing Will from veering into a semi truck in the next lane. 

    “Will.”

     “I’m fine,” Will managed, wiping the tears off his face with the back of his hand and trying to steady his breathing. “It’s gone. I’m fine now.” 

“Will,” Apollo repeated, taking in his son’s red-rimmed eyes. “You are not fine. There’s a rest stop over on that exit. Stop there, please.”

 “Why? I have gas-” Will stopped suddenly, watching as the dial on his fuel gauge dropped swiftly to empty. It had been half full just a moment ago. He knew his father wasn’t about to fill it back up. 

“Really, Dad?”

“Stop at the rest stop. Please.”
