Today's wasp of the day is the hornet clearwing....

....moth. That's a hornet clearwing moth (Paranthrene simulans). Pretty convincing especially with how it even mimic's how a wasp flies but the antennae and fluffy face give it away.

You know what. Fine. Let's just go with a not-wasp for the wasp of the day. And in that case I choose this freak:
Today's (not) wasp of the day is the brown wasp mantidfly (Climaciella brunnea)!

This neuropteran's inspiration is specifically paper wasps (genus: polistes) and will even have matching color morphs in reference to what wasp species are most in the area. Their imitation doesn't just stop at looks though! When provoked these awkward triangle centaurs will adopt the posture of a wasp getting ready to sting— except they got nothing to sting with and are just hoping you won't call their bluff (look out for the raptorial arms though!)
