What did you think of the incidents in the Black Metal scene during the 90s?
That’s hard to answer, because we were all friends, of course. If we’re talking about Øystein’s surroundings, I think he was struggling to build a foundation for his new life. That’s because he was alone at the time. He had many people gathering in the shop, doing his label and releasing albums. It was a very strange time. It was chaotic. That’s the best way to describe it. I think it’s great that Øystein released ‘De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas’. Even if he didn’t get to see its release, he was really enthusiastic about it. Krisitan killing Øystein was a tragedy - of course, murder is always a tragedy. Well, I can’t make sense of it to this day. Kristian was very young and mentally unstable, perhaps. Later he’d say all this Nazi stuff, maybe he was a troubled child. Mayhem would be involved in various more things, but this was definitely a tragedy.
What kind of person was Euronymous?
He was my best friend. We liked a lot of the same music. It went much deeper than simply wanting to become rockstars, because rather than become a rockstar, I wanted to explore music. In that regard, he was much more ambitious than me. He wanted to tour, but I wanted to make albums. He was very intelligent and it was fun to talk to him, because I like people who read books and really understand them. He wasn’t superficial, but deeply invested in music. We would discuss soundscapes and how to create different sounds, you know. We both liked sophisticated music. He was a good friend and a good discussion partner. We would discuss politics, philosophy, music and so on. We shared an interest in intellectual topics. He was smart and had good grades. He came from a middleclass, upper-middleclass background and had the means and brains to do what he wanted. He was much better than me at mathematics or physics. I was bad at those subjects, social studies suited me much more (laughs). He was a really nice guy - I wouldn’t have had a band with him otherwise, obviously. Jørn and I knew each other well from childhood, and we were looking for someone to play in the band with, you know. That’s when we met Øystein. For me, it was a perfect match, and I think it was the same for him.
You said earlier that Euronymous was ‘alone’.
That’s just my opinion. Many people gathered at his shop, but they were all younger and looked up to him in that Metal world. But I don’t think he had anyone to actually discuss things with. I was there, of course, and we were in contact a few days before he was killed. But I don’t think he had anyone to share his ideas and visions with in day to day life. Also, at that time, he became aggressive towards the people around him. But the Øystein that I knew was a mature person that liked discussing music. I think he wanted to portray himself as the owner of an evil record shop. I don’t know if that was the real him. That probably wore him out. Things got worse because Jørn and I weren’t there - because there was nobody who could give their opinion as an equal. In that sense, he was alone.

Note: the word 孤独 can mean ‘alone’ as well as ‘lonely’, but I decided to go with ‘alone’ because it was less emotionally charged. This interview was originally conducted in English, I assume, and translated into Japanese, so I can only vouch for my own manual translation.
