One of the many 18th-century Neapolitan nativity scenes in the collection of the National Museum of San Martino. In Naples, nativity scenes were traditionally more significant than Christmas trees which weren’t put up in Neapolitan homes until the 1950s. Often the birth of Jesus is in the background while more attention is given to the bustle of activity among people from all walks of life. The procession of the Magi is usually depicted with exotic costumes and trappings.

Before the 16th century, only monasteries had nativity scenes. Later they began to appear in the homes of the aristocracy. The presepe  reflected what the aristocratic families believed the life of the people was like and didn’t necessarily correspond with reality. Eventually, smaller nativity scenes became more affordable to the average citizens, or they made their own. Nativity figures are now among the most popular souvenirs for tourists in Naples.
