NGL does anyone have a song they “reclaimed.” Because in 2012 I was a small country town girl who didn’t know what Eurovision was. My primary school put all the girls in my year into the local esteddford in the dance section. The school principal ran the entire thing, even choosing the song, which was Zaleilah by Mandinga (after much sifting through that year’s Eurovision catalogue.)
Anyway the whole thing was a mess. The dance he cherographed was basically the same three moves repeated over and over. The girl he picked as leader- well she barely knew the dance and we all got in trouble for not following her, even though she didn’t know the dance. And to top it all off, I missed one rehearsal and his solution was to make me yeet off stage halfway through the song which, hell no was I running off like that because of just look stupid. And like I said, the last chorus was so easy to learn. I actually cried about that.
In the end we got highly commended. The boys won. Even, a few years later when Australia even announced their participation, all I could think of was that dance.
Fast forward to 2019. I’m now a hardcore Eurovision fan, in my final year of high school. And while I’m discovering ESC I think of that dance and I wonder what song it was. I only remember it was from Eurovision. So I go through 2011 and 2012 and I found Zaleilah.
And it was a bop.
And even though I had this not so nice memory associated with the song, I played it and played it over and over, when studying for my final exams, in the car. It ended up being my 4th most played of 2019. Now when I think of that song, I think of my final year of high school, and all the fun I had that year. It feels like a giant f you to primary school in a way.
