Warrior series on Cinemax
Warrior is an action series inspired by Bruce Lee's writing. I've started watching it on Showmax and I'm only two episodes in but I'm hooked! While there are some really good one liners, the writing is only so-so. But my gods, the story itself is so intriguing and the fight scenes hella entertaining!
Andrew Koji as lead character Ah Sahm steals every scene, heck, steals the show! Other favs are Olivia Cheng as the ass kicking Madame Ah Toy and the funny and possibly slightly unhinged Young Jun played by Jason Tobin.
Like I said I've only seen two episodes, but I already have a gripe. And I'm reluctant to bitch about the negative, especially so early on, when I am very much enjoying the show, in fact the only reason I am sharing it is because I tried Googling my gripe with the show and couldn't find anything online about it to satisfy my frustration knowing I don't feel it alone but searches came up empty so I feel I have to just get it out.
See the thing is that there are two beautiful, strong Chinese woman characters who are both being portrayed as deceptive and conniving(!!) while the one rich white lady with the racist husband gets to be warm and kind and seemingly fighting for "the little guy" before going home to her mansion where she is waited on by Chinese servants. In the second episode it is clear that something might develop between her and Ah Sahm and, Idk, I'm mad about it man! I'm mad that the writers have decided to pass up the opportunity to explore a relationship between warrior Ah Sahm and badass Ah Toy who not only kicks ass with a freaking sword but also runs her own business, albeit a brothel..
Instead they've decided to take the predictable route and pair the poor little rich white lady with a heart (and purse) of gold with the exotic, mysterious Chinese guy. Maybe that's not what they're doing and I'm completely jumping the gun here, but lord, she dropped her glove on the floor and he picked it up and ran after her if that ain't some we gon fuck later bullshit I dunno what is.
But other than that tiny little massive problem for me I'm really loving the show and fun fact it was shot here in my home town, Cape Town, South Africa. ☺️
