Watch Democratic Politician Zohran Mamdani Defend Trans People in Election Ad
In the article “You Have to See This Mamdani Ad,” Katelyn Burns highlights a new campaign advertisement by Zohran Mamdani that is all about defending trans rights.
Mamdani is the Democratic nominee for mayor of New York City in the 2025 election.
The ad (embedded above) begins with a voiceover from transgender activist Sylvia Rivera. It uses the instrumental version of Sophie’s “It’s Okay to Cry,” paying homage to the late trans musician.
Mamdani then weaves Rivera’s life story - her activism in 1970s New York and her fight against marginalization - into a reflection on how trans people today still face similar hostility and institutional targeting.
