amycus carrow, evan rosier, lucius malfoy, marlene mckinnon, rodolphus lestrange: just kids running reckless, once. but times change, and sometimes the people you once knew best look like strangers in the light of the day.
(and yetâdespite all the years apart, itâs astonishingly easy to recognise something raw in each other and feel it strike you right in the heart, your blood thrumming with the knowledge that you never got them out from under your skin. just wait: itâll break your heart.)

Elena rocked back and forth on her feet, glancing around at her fellow students nervously. She didnât want to be called in for questioning. She wanted to run back into the Muggle World. Away from everything that wouldnât leave her alone. She didnât think she could face another interrogation in a dark room. Yet, a woman came out and stared at her.Â
âElena Woodrow, if you will come this way...â
She didnât move for a moment, taking a deep breath as if that was the last taste of oxygen she would ever get. Stepping forward, she was brought into a room and faced someone who nearly caused her to stumble backwards.Â
âMiss Woodrow,â the man began. â Iâm sure you will be pleased to see a familiar face.â Not in the fucking slightest. âAs the one who spoke with you during Matthewâs case, I must say itâs quite surprising to see you here under these circumstances. As a Level Three you will serve two weeks of detention, to be given by the Head of Ravenclaw, you will have to write a statement and your parents will be notified.â
All Elena did was nod because she felt sick to her stomach just having to be in this kind of setting again.Â
The man coughed, clearing his throat as if this was going to take a while so she groaned, settling back into her seat.
âTo begin the questioning, where were you when this attack occurred?â
Elenaâs stomach now literally churned. She scoffed at the man and rolled her eyes. âThis wasnât a fucking attack, okay? An attack is when people are hurt on purpose. This was some piece of shit who mixed his ingredients wrong so we all have to suffer. Donât call this an attack,â she snapped. âAnd for your information, I was in the ballroom just like basically everyone else.â
The man nodded and wrote something down. The quill scratching against parchment made her want to grit her teeth. âYou were found to have possessed a surplus of drugs, some of them dangerous, as well as other studentâs essay. Why do you have these items?â
âHmm, letâs see,â she didnât think once about keeping her mouth in check. Why should she? What did this piece of shit government ever do for her? âI had the drugs because I woke up, expecting to make my boyfriend breakfast but instead I held his dead body in my arms. Thatâs not something I can cope with without a little assistance and donât waste your time suggesting therapy. Iâm doing that too.â She looked bored as she continued on to the second part. âAnd I have the essays because people breed idiots who pay me money to finish their work. Iâll have you know that the names on all of those papers are fake,â she lied easily. âClient confidentiality and all that.â She wanted to see the man cave and grow frustrated. He hadnât now and he hadnât then.Â
âIs there anyone you know who you would deem suspicious or dangerous?â He simply continued with his questions and she sighed.Â
âCan I tell you something?â She asked in a tone that implied she would divulge a huge secret, so convincing actually, that he leaned in.âWhen youâve been through an actual fucking attack, everyone seems suspicious or dangerous.â
He still wouldnât crack. âDo you feel safe in the halls of Hogwarts, Elena?â
âAre you kidding me?! No, I donât! I literally just told you it doesnât feel safe. God would you like me to tell you my rates so I can do your work for you?â Sheâd finally done it. He finally let out a slight sigh and she grinned smugly.
âFinally, at the time of Matthewâs death you said you didnât remember any of the faces. Has this changed at all?â
She stood up quickly, angrily. âIs that what this whole fucking thing was leading up to? Tell me, Buddy, do you think if I remembered in the slightest who was there I wouldnât tell you immediately. I promise Iâm fighting for Matthewâs justice a lot more than you are mate. So to answer, no it hasnât.â
She was dismissed and rushed to give the Auror her parentâs address so this would be over.Â
â20 Galleons and itâll be our little secret,â the man said. Elena looked at him in disgust and addressed the envelope to her parents.Â
âFind the people who killed my boyfriend and youâll get your fucking 20 Galleons, how about that?â

â Olivia tried to form a coherent sentence in her head. Her thoughts were rivers, storms she couldnât find shelter from. Word after word crashed against the gates of her teeth. â
Oliviaâs hands shook. She clasped them in front of her as the auror led her into an empty classroom, perching herself on the edge of a desk. The woman gestured for her to take a seat. Dim light cast shadows about the room, causing an eerie sort of melodrama. Olivia sat down, careful not to take up more space than she felt she was allowed, all compact and held together. She looked up at the woman standing before her. âWeâre just here to discuss some things with you, one of these being your punishment. As a Level Three you are directly in the middle of our spectrum which means you will serve two weeks of detention, run by your Head of House, and your parents will be notified. Now, letâs begin.â
Olivia cleared her throat. âParent,â she corrected quietly. âI, uh, itâs just my dad. So, parent.â The auror gave her a look that spoke a thousand words, most of which being âI didnât need to know that.â âSorry, um, continue, please.â
âAs you know, a student was poisoned on the night of the Halloween ball. Where were you when this occurred?â the auror asked, squinting at her.
Olivia tried to form a coherent sentence in her head. Her thoughts were rivers, storms she couldnât find shelter from. Word after word crashed against the gates of her teeth. âI was just outside in the designated area, waiting for my da-â He wasnât your date. âFor my friend to return. He was getting food, I think.â
It quickly became clear that the auror intended to finish the conversation quickly, as she gave Olivia the courtesy of a nod before moving on. âAmong your possessions were enchanted lighters. Why do you have these and who supplied them to you?â she asked, her tone brisk and authoritative. Oliviaâs eyes flicked to a folder on the desk, what mustâve been her name scrawled out on the front of it. It would be easy to lie, to fake her way out of it and say they were just practice objects, that she had never actually succeeded. It would be equally as easy to rat Dean out, tell the intimidating woman before her who had given her the lighters.
Olivia tucked  apiece of hair behind her ear. âTheyâre mine. I got them over the summer when I was back home. Muggles use them to start fires, but I figure you know that,â she said, accidentally letting words spill from between her lips. She could see silver glinting from between the covers of the envelope and pointed towards them. âMay I?â she asked. The auror looked hesitant before giving her a slight nod. Olivia retrieved the lighters and returned to her seat. âThey, uh, these are just duds, really. But I was trying to charm them never to run out of fluid,â she explained, demonstrating and pointing. âSo that you could use them around muggles but youâd never have to buy a new one. I was also toying around with a protean charm, just trying to see if I could get one to work. But, as you can see, it didnât.â She placed the lighter back on the table.
âAnd are there any Dark uses for these lighters?â she asked, looking at her incredulously, as if she truly thought Olivia King was capably of any sort of destruction. Other than that of herself, of course.
âOh, no maâam. Iâm quite advanced in charms, so I was trying to give myself a challenge,â she lied.
âCan you think of anyone who you think should be under suspicion? We did conduct thorough searches but that doesnât mean we can get a grasp on someone personally.â The question hit her like a ton of bricks. There were many students with incriminating substances, students she was surprised hadnât landed themselves on that list.Â
âNo maâam,â she lied again. Dean Alton, that son of a bitch. âNone that I can think of. No one that wasnât on the list, anyway.â
The auror seemed suspicious, but moved on. âIs there anything else you would like to share with us that may be important to the safety of other students?â
âNo maâam,â she said, feeling like a broken record. The room felt too hot and too dark and too small, as if the roof was about to cave in on her. She needed to get out of there. The lies were swallowing her whole. Flashbacks of her first few years played on loop in her mind. It felt as if her lungs had been punctured, popped and drained of all their air like little party balloons.
âYouâre free to go, Miss King. Thank you for you cooperation.â The womanâs words sounded like whispers as Olivia stood, shook the womanâs hand, and walked quickly out into the hall. With high ceilings and stone lit only by a faint moon, Olivia felt as if she could breathe again. She rounded a corner, opposite the rest of the students waiting for questioning, and pressed her back against a stone wall. A few tears kissed at her cheeks, hands tugging at her hair. Her breathing was heavy and erratic, as if sheâd just ran a four minute mile. She took the lighter from its spot, tucked in a pocket sheâd sewn into her robe, and ran a finger over the text, pulling out her wand. She didnât expect him to keep it on his person, but it couldnât hurt. Â With a swish, she transfigured the message to read a simple youâre welcome.Â
Lucius was not surprised to find his father waiting outside the hall. He was standing a little way from the aurors with that certain air of dispassion which only Abraxas Malfoy could pull off whilst still being so very present in the moment . Heâd notified his father to come knowing that he had his ways of finding out about such things without Luciusâ express help. Lucius also knew just how useful his father would be in getting him out of this rather sticky situation.
âFather,â Lucius allowed, his voice curt. He was expecting to see lightning in the other manâs stormy eyes, but all he saw was swirling clouds. At Luciusâ puzzled expression, Abraxas only shook his head before leaning in to hug Lucius. He would be a fool to believe that there was any sentiment behind the gesture, especially when the older Malfoy said, âSpeak only when necessary, Lucius.â Lucius nodded, the faintest of movements before they went to the auror they had been assigned.
The auror cut straight to the chase as soon as they sat across from him in an empty classroom. âMister and Mister Malfoy, weâve discovered a pocketwatch with some sort of tracker inside it that has traces of Dark Magic in your possession, Lucius. Considering your Prefect status we were somewhat surprised but as a Level Four, you have been subjected to at least a month in detention with your Head of House who will decide if further punishment needs to be put into effect. The pocketwatch has been confiscated. You will also be submitted to questioning which will begin now.â
Lucius lost all touch with time in that moment. A pocketwatch. He had no questions as to which pocketwatch the auror was speaking of, for the one Amycus had given him currently resided in his pocket and had been there since it had been given to him. Lucius hadnât thought much of the one which he had kicked beneath his bed, the one that his father had given to him for his birthday. Lucius wanted to throw something across the room, he wanted to scream at his father, but he also wanted to find out what exactly heâd been planted with. Kicking and screaming certainly wouldnât help his case. It took him a few moments to realise that the auror had asked him a question. âMy apologies, could you repeat that?â
âI asked where you were when the event took place.â
âI was at the ball, you may check with Adella Nott, I was with her at the time,â Lucius hesitated for a moment, glancing at his father before turning his faux confident gaze back to the auror, âThere are several witnesses that can also attest to that.â While the auror was jotting everything down, Lucius allowed himself to exchange a glance with his father who still wasnât letting anything on.
âNext, where did you get this pocket watch? Who supplied it to you and what is its purpose?â
Before Lucius could answer, his father interjected. âI gave it to him for his birthday,â he began in an offhanded way, âItâs a family heirloom. While it does have sister watches which are used for spying, the one you found in my sonâs possession is only for me to be able to make sure that Lucius is doing okay. His mother worries you see.â It was a technique that Lucius himself was well rehearsed in. Maintain as much truth as possible and only change what was absolutely necessary. The auror didnât say anything, for a few moments the only sound in the room was his quill scratching across his parchment. Lucius however was struggling to keep his breaths even. âDo you know of any illicit materials your dormmates have that we didnât find? Cooperation will be rewarded.â Lucius felt his fatherâs eyes boring into the side of his head.
âNo.â
âDo you see yourself as a dangerous person, by any means? Remember, cooperation will be rewarded.â
Lucius bit back a laugh at that. âOf course not, as my father said, my mother only worries that iâm not too stressed with school work on top of my prefect duties,â Lucius ground out with a small smile. A bloody spying device.
âLastly, if there is anything else you have to say while you can, please do so now.â
Lucius shrugged, âOnly that I completely understand if the watch cannot be returned to me. Iâm sure my father will understand that Iâve had to let go of his gift.â Lucius returned Abraxasâ gaze. âIâm happy to carry out any punishment you see fit.â The auror finally glanced between both Lucius and his father, âIt appears that this has largely been a misunderstanding,â now he only had his eyes upon Abraxas, âIâm sure we could come to some sort of negotiation. Lucius, that will be all, you may return to your dinner. Thank you for your cooperation.â Â
An announcement makes its way through the Great Hall.Â
The evening meal is only half over as Dumbledore takes the stand.Â
âThe Aurors have returned for questioning. Can all of the students whose names were called please make their way to the exit where you will be taken in turns for questioning. The rest of you, please enjoy your dessert!â
Students stand up, some with their heads tucked down, others proud that theyâd broken a rule. All lining up outside of the Great Hall.
There are several Aurors waiting to question - interrogate - the students. Punishments range from a few detentions to a file at the Ministry. If you comply you will be rewarded with a shorter interview. All incriminating answers will be kept anonymous. Some students begin looking around, wondering who would dare snitch. All parents or guardians will be contacted. they tell them.Â
Except thereâs a single Auror, tasked with addressing and sending the letters, with a glint in his eye. He knows that for the right price, a certain letter may find its way into the nearest fireplace instead of home. 20 Galleons, he whispers to those who have finished their interrogation. 20 Galleons and no one else needs to know about this.Â
Things arenât so cut and dry in the government anymore, that much is certain. Students enter the Great Hall with a variety of expressions. Some downtrodden, others relieved. A singular thought seems to go through the crowd as the sweets disappear.Â
What on Earth were these people hiding?
Hello players! Here is another task! For those muns who have characters who were caught during the raid, you will be receiving questions in that characterâs inbox. Please answer them as your character would, using whatever style youâd like (i.e. self-para). Starters can also be posted involving punishments, as the characters will receive these as well. Minerva is very displeased with her students and therefore very happy to plot.
Many of the students will be asked if they are suspicious of any other students. Please discuss with the other mun before your character uses another characterâs name if thatâs something your character chooses to do!
For those who didnât have a character who got in trouble during the raid, donât worry, weâve got something else up our sleeves.
