#Repost @homebrewheero ・・・ Today I’m enjoying the relatively nice weather before the impending storm with some #homebrewed beer! ☀️ . First I dug into @brewingwright’s “End of Summer Shandy”! Yes, I know I’m a bit late for this style, but today was as good a day as any to dig into it 😅. I’m very impressed! Aroma of lemon and sweet citrus. And ultimately a very well executed shandy reminiscent of the commercial beers I grew up with. I really appreciate the dry finish. Great job man, this is a well made brew! 👍🍻 . Next, @marycims’ nut brown ale! It’s got a nutty aroma with faint malt and hop. I immediately noticed the wonderful body and carbonation for the style, and again, familiar flavors to commercial brews like the Samuel Smith’s Nut Brown Ale. A very well executed brew! 👍🍻 . Lastly, I dug into my own “Gungnir” barleywine. Immediately I’m hit with with an undesirable “green apple” aroma. However, the strong, sweet malty flavors seem to hide any off flavors. I also got some ripe fruit and faint vanilla from it. This brew was only bottled three weeks ago, and certainly needs much more time to develop 🍻. . From A Cabinet of Byzantine Curiosities by Anthony Kaldellis BEER An early account of the brewing of beer was added by a scribe to the works of the famous alchemist of the fourth century, Zosimos of Panopolis. It says: Take good, clean, white barley and soak it for one day. Then take it out of the water and set it in a windless place until the morning. Soak it again for five hours. Then place it on a shallow strainer and wet it. Then dry it until it becomes like a cushion and, when that happens, let it dry in the sun until it falls apart, for the little hairs are bitter. Then grind it and make it into loaves, adding yeast as if you were making bread, but heat it more. When it rises, crumble it using fresh water and strain it through a strainer or fine sieve. Others bake the loaves in an oven with water, but heat it only little bit so that it does not boil or become lukewarm; then, they take it out and strain it. They cover it, heat it, and pour it out.
