Without hesitating, he clamps his hand around the edge of the door and swings it open to see— Chihaya, kneeling on the tile floor in front of the toilet, staring back at him with his eyes wide open and his jaw slack. That Chihaya, who always tells him off for chewing with his mouth open or for getting dirt on him when Makita slings an arm over his shoulders, leaning his arms against the rim of the seat, clutching the edge with his bare hands. They’re white at the knuckles.
