why have the shitty makeover-the-shy-girl-to-be-conventionally-attractive trope in teen movies when you could have:
- newly out trans character gets made over to feel more comfortable as their new gender
- miserable character gets their tip of a bedroom completely tidied and redone by their friends
- character breaks up with controlling partner who would criticise them for dressing how they wanted so they go on a shopping trip with their new and improved confidence
- similarly, character who just moved away from controlling home is now allowed to dress however they way
- i just want a goth one. can we have a goth makeover? please?
Tropes
Instead of the makeover trope of:
“I hate wearing contacts” “Wear them anyway for BEAUTY!!!!”
How about we change it to:
“I don’t like wearing contacts” “Well obviously the only thing to do is get you BETTER glasses!”
Anyone else dislike any small tropes that they would like to change?
On The Trope Of The Makeover
Hi I'm not quite sure what to say Went to see a movie today Gave me an essay idea Guess I'll write it down here About the makeover trope in films, to be brief: it's a nope Consid'ring the sociocultural context And the implications re:beauty ideals, as on next: In short, and you maybe find this extreme, The trope of the makeover oft makes it seem As ig girls only deserve to be given respect If their looks are what fashion considers correct As if conforming to men's expectations Will provide them with s'posedly long'd-for elations The makeover's often meant to represent A character's newly gained empowerment When I'd argue that actually instead it forms A reinforcement of oppressive beauty norms So anyway, many thanks for your attention And sorry for anything I failed to mention.
Needed: a makeover montage that stops abruptly when the makeover diva tries to take the lead girl's glasses off *SLAP* "Bitch, I'm not taking my glasses off, I need them to see." "But you'd look so much better if I just -" "It doesn't matter how much better I'd look without glasses, 'cause I wouldn't be able to see it." "But - " "Pay for new frames, then we'll talk about taking the glasses off."

A real cool way to look at the makeover trope in media os just to admire how human beings need tp see women in beautiful clothes. Every woman deserves to go do groceries in gowns. I fear That's common sense.
it's the teen movie makeover trope except the reveal is me, an adult who barely wears makeup anymore with teeth aligners and a first-time glasses prescription
