Okay okay but heart me out--Boyfriend!Caleb loves making you lots of snacks, but you just got Invisalign so you can't eat unless you take your retainers out but your mouth hurts...and you'll have to brush your teeth...and you can only have them out for a limited time....so it's basically just torture. For both of you tho. It practically drives Caleb crazy seeing you suffer but also seeing the food he made ESPECIALLY for you go to waste...

just switched my invisalign trays for the first time. -5/10 experience. Will be playing Tomodachi Life and watching my little Pitt characters run around to ease the pain.

vampires with Invisalign
so recently I had to get Invisalign and know I can’t stop thinking about a vampire having it a it being a constant struggle to feed off people. Like imagine you going to be bitten by a vampire and all you feel is plastic and the vampire swearing and reaching into there mouth in front of you to take the stupid things out. Like I would have to laugh at that. This might be my first and only post but I had to get that though out of my head
Ok so I clicked on an ad for a pod that's supposed to clean retainers on instagram, and ever since I've been getting a lot of ads for cleaners along those lines. It's starting to make me kinda anxious? Like, there's one where a person shows like a dark hole in their teeth and talks about how it happened because of a dirty retainer. I have invisalign and I don't really clean it except under the shower water (It gets hotter than the sink and I've found the hot water helps in washing stuff away) and now i'm like really paranoid and I've sorta been wearing my aligners less than I'm supposed to. Like I know the retainer's probably gotta be a lot worse than my invisalign get to cause problems but how much problems *can* it cause?
hey anon, this is a great question!! a lot of people don't really realize how much bacteria can be hanging out in their retainers, and it can absolutely cause cavities. now, those big dark holes you're seeing on people's teeth in the ads are extremely exaggerated for dramatic effect. they're trying to scare you into buying their product. those little ultrasonic pods are great, but not something everybody needs, especially if you're cleaning your appliances regularly.
the problems caused by a dirty retainer are going to be less visible, and will develop slowly. this is a huge reason why seeing a dentist regularly, especially during orthodontic treatment, is so important!! a dentist can catch a cavity on an x-ray while it's still small, long before it turns into a hole that you can see with the naked eye. if your retainer is in need of a clean, you'll notice your teeth feeling "sticky" and your breath smelling bad before you'll see a big gaping hole in your tooth.
since you're in invisalign, you're getting new trays anywhere from every 1-6 weeks, so they're probably not getting anywhere near dirty enough to cause a cavity right away. however, you still need to be cleaning your aligners. the good news is that it's totally fine to wash them in the shower like you've been doing, all you need to do is add soap!! anything antibacterial is fine - we usually recommend dawn dish soap, as it's a great cleaner, but gentle enough that if there's residue that doesn't get rinsed away it shouldn't irritate your tissues too much.
the mistake a lot of people make is brushing their aligners or retainers with toothpaste, which can actually damage them over time due to the abrasive ingredients in toothpaste. they're made of plastic, not enamel, so they have to be cleaned a little differently than our teeth do!! if you're in the shower, all you need to do is squirt a little soap into the trays, scrub it with your fingers until it lathers, and then rinse it away. you can also do this in the sink, or leave them in a cup of soapy water while you're brushing, and rinse them off afterward.
if you do invest in an ultrasonic pod, you only need to use that every so often, not every single time you clean it. once every 1-2 months should be just fine.
