this will probably come up in recording anyways but i was wondering if u could discuss ur thoughts on why calla calls ronan a snake??? it never made sense to me because altho ronan is a total dick on the outside, we all know he's actually a haunted softie?? and i would think that calla's psychometry would mean she would be the one out of all of them to know this??? do u think it's just the unknowness of the greywaren in him or?? thank you!!
Shannonās answer:
Softy or not, I think Calla is accurate here. Ronan is a snake, not in that heās untrustworthy, but in that heās dangerous. Heās hurting, and in his pain, he lashes out and hurts people around him. He is very often described in ways that make him feel constantly coiled and ready to strike. Plus, like you said, thereās the fact that heās the Greywaren. I can see a lot of things that Calla could have seen when she touched him that would cause her to react like she did. Her psychometry doesnāt see EVERYTHING about what she touches, remember, and thereās a lot that Ronan is hiding even from himself at this point.
Nievitaās answer:
āRonan Lynchās stare was a snake on the sidewalk where you wanted to walk. It was a match left on your pillow. It was pressing your lips together and tasting your own blood.ā (Adamās POV in TRK)
Calla is not the only one who refers to Ronan as a snake. Throughout the books heās described with snake or viper imagery, even in the POV of people who donāt know himālike with the Gray Man in Chap. 25 of TDT: āThis was not a rattlesnake hidden in the grass, but a deadly coral snake striped with warning colors.ā Or in Blueās POV in Chap 1 of BLLB: āRonan looked as pleased as a pit viper ever could.ā
Thereās also the possibility that Ronan thinks of himself with snake imagery, and thatās what Calla is picking up on. Iād love to explore the imagery of Catholicism and snakes⦠with just a brief search Wikipedia said this: ā(The Hebrew word) for āsnakeā is also associated with divination, including the verb form meaning āto practice divination or fortune-tellingā.ā I find this really interesting because I see a lot of parallels between Calla and Ronan in their demeanor and attitude.
