♘ - a memory of their sibling

One night, when you were both huddledtogether trying to sleep in the icy grip of night, your brother noticed youstaring at his precious iron ring.

“Mm,you okay there, love?” He loosened his cozy embrace, still sluggish andhalf-asleep. “Need anything?” 

Youshook your head ‘no’ and quickly tried getting comfortable again, ready todoze off, but he chuckled in response. “Hey, now, little one. I do know whenyou’re lying.”

Aftera pause, you freed your hands from under your dusty blanket and wrapped them aroundhis own, just admiring the differences. Janus had large, strong hands, coveredin small scars and scrapes… His skin was rough, but still comforting, and healways seemed dehydrated or clammy, which very much bothered you. On one of historn up fingers was aring, tinged by rust and dirt, and you had not once seen him withoutit.

“…Wheresis from?” you asked quietly, turning around to meet your elder brother’s warmgaze. He seemed a little surprised you had asked.

“Youmean, where I got it? Well, ah… Hmm.” Janus slid off the ring and let it dropinto your grasp for you to better examine it. Now you could clearly see the bits ofmetal that remained shiny and unscathed, the runic inscriptions within theinner circle that you couldn’t discern… “You were only a wee thing,” he said. “It was a gift,like. From our fa–”

Hisstory was interrupted by a sharp gasp, followed by a fit of coughing. Youimmediately sat up and reached out to make sure he was alright, and as usual,he shooed you away andglanced away from you until he was through. Despite the excitement, you made sureyou kept your grip tight.

When he caught his breath, he smiled,despite his discomfort, and carefully continued talking. “Oh, it’s notimportant anyhow. What is important is thatsomeday this ring might just be yours!”

Youwere suddenly beaming, distracted from any tinge of worry, exactly as he’d planned. “Y-You would be really givingsit to me…?”

oh gosh definitely maglynn, when she gets the time to cook she’ll make a meal big enough to feed several guilds and not even think about it, she just gets so excited and caught up in what she’s doing that she doesn’t notice what’s going on till she reaches for sugar or flour and there is none
