day 20! i really loved working on this one- the umbrella had a clear vision in my mind... didn't execute it perfectly as i had less than a day. regardless, had a ton of fun with the colours, hope you like it too
tma au where everythings the same except jmart adopt that fuckin beast from mag 175 and just bring it with them everywhere like a weird dog
also it should get to bite Jonah somewhere. preferably dick
i feel like the reason why The Extinction as a fear doesn't really come through quite as effectively in the s5 statements is primarily due to the lack of guilt that having an apocalyptic world forced onto you by a random single event of some freak with too many eyes in an act you could never have forseen generates in comparison to the steadily more apocalyptic world forced upon you by entirely human actions. Like for my girl Leah in mag175 things weren't actually that awful for her - she had a purpose ((her little catalogue)) and she was coping relatively with the world as it was. This is due to the fact that it wasn't the fault of humanity - it was the fault of an all-powerful eltrich being - and therefore it just doesnt really represent a major part of The Extinction, the idea that so much of this devastation was done for you. That you as a consumer as indirectly damning a world you don't truly know, and that every purchase has consequences you'll never truly know (and don't want to know) against other people and/or the environment. Like you can have as many massive predator seagulls as you want, but that doesn't help to encapsulate the fear that The Extinction truly represents and the idea that we as both a collective and as individuals are currently decimating the natural world that has been around for so long. That fucked up umbrella doesn't do anything to really inspire any dread or fear because there is nothing left for it to truly harm, which i feel is another important reason The Extinction wouldn't gather as much fear in an already post-apocalyptic world.
The fear from The Extinction is typically borne from helplessness - people are driving animals to extinction for the products you use and there is no way to avoid it and nothing to truly be done. this comes with the knowledge that even if you personally do everything to avoid adding to it, 1: it's impossible, and 2: it won't truly do anything as an individual ((absolutely not a radical opinion i know but bear with me here)).
The problem with this however for the writing, is that the apocalypse has already happened. There is no more extinction, there is no more waiting and watching with nothing to do, because things in Leah's domain (it's the only ep i relistened to recently so im basing most of this on her episode - don't hate too hard if im actually just saying/completely contradicting things that happened in canon pls) have already gotten as bad as they'll ever be. there are no more people for her, and that's awful obviously but it also presents hope that shouldn't exist in this Fear domain, because she should then expect things to get better, as the world will recover without people. obviously it won't actually, as this is a domain away from the world at all, but i feel it's pretty clear in the episode that she doesn't actually have the level of understanding of the situation - because why would she?
TLDR: as much as i love The Extinction as a concept, due to the fact the eyepocalypse was completely out of people's control, generally the s5 statements lack the guilt that i feel is integral to the fear. as well as this, as the only s5 extinction ep i can remember happens in a post-apocalyptic domain, it also lacks the idea of waiting for things to continuously get worse and be helpless to do anything about it.
lmk if im missing anything!! :3
@a-mag-a-day had to do a little doodle for today i love this episode

….its been a hot sec. But welcome back to “new fan listens to TMA S5, mostly blind!” In ur host, the “new fan” quote en quote.
MAG 175: Epoch
Ooo. Yeah this hits pretty hard in this day and age. I think The Extinction is high on my ranking of “which entities would fuck me up the most”. I think anon can’t process everything. I also think it’s funny he can’t answer most stuff despite being Y’know google. I guess it’s hard.
MAG 176: Blood Ties
FUCKING TREVOR??? I thought he died the moment Not-Sasha went after him and Julia. I guess he’s dead now.
Poor Martin. Bro just wants to be in the loop of things but that doesn’t matter because BASIRAAAA. I never thought I’d be so happy to hear that voice.
It’s so interesting that she’s still chasing after Daisy. Is she some avatar of The Hunt? They never say it but istg, Basira has these obsessive tendencies that scream The Hunt. I’m just obsessed. With her.
Sounds like Daisy is a wolf now. Go fursona
MAG 177: Wonderland
So I’ve heard this episode thrown around vaguely and heard about Dr David, who was sone gaslighting doctor but I never really paid attention. But guys holy shit I cannot stress to you all enough on how terrified I was. I was circling my kitchen island and grabbing water every 10 seconds. Something about this freaked me out. The second-person, the way Dr David belittled and threatened and his cherry attitude I hated it. I was shrieking.
But also Helen!!!! <33 I wonder what’s her game, offering Basira a one-way ride to Daisy. It certainly wasn’t out of the kindness of her own heart. Did she want to trap Basira maybe in her hallways? Or did she know Basira would decline and wanted to sow a little seed of distrust in the now trio. I wonder why Basira declined. I thought she would totally abandon Jon and Martin. Either way, crazy episode.
MAG 178: The Processing Line
Oh this was depressing. I liked how Martin and Basira made Jon go into the tool closet, I thought that was funny. But damn…Tyler :(((
I also think it’s crazy that people were just…created. The entities can do that?? Just make life?? Or reflections or whatever. Is there no limit? Sorry for all these rhetorical questions, I just have many of them
Also! At one point, Basira asked who is in charge here and Jon said, “Not anyone you’re familiar with. We won’t be meeting them.” And “he’s in the, uh… Main Processing Room.” So now I’m thinking about who could it be. There was a statement about a guy who worked at a slaughterhouse (MAG 30) and Tom Hann was always a big name for The Flesh. I can’t remember if he died though. If he didn’t, then he could be in charge of this factory. I’m just theorizing though.
Okay. That’s everything. Uhhhhhh I have been really not listening but it’s not that I lost interest. I’ve been so busy and this season is just a lot. But thanks for reading my rambles
OH! STUPID UMBRELLA DAY!!
Happy stupid umbrella day ☔
“Oh, what’s your favourite tma episode?”
The one where Jon makes fun of an umbrella
