we’ll never escape the ghosts of the past

It was a heavy fog that settled across my town that early 2013 morning. I was looking for anything to fill the void Motorcity’s cancellation left, my body a walking shell of fragile emotions. I didn’t know of Rick and Morty’s existence yet. Steven Universe wasn’t the continuity-filled show it is now. I feared for my life if I dared say I thought Teen Titans GO was cute at the start. There wasn’t anything to fill that Motorcity-shaped heartbreak. 

I settled in for another afternoon of idly strolling through tumblr to kill time when a single promotional image came through someone’s otherwise well curated blog. It looked… Not amazing. But I thought if my friend, who usually has better taste and much higher standards than I do, was promoing it, then I’d give it a shot. 

I regret those days. I look back at 2013, a time of darkness and absurd humor coming through a ghost named “Billie Joe Cobra”, and asking what could possibly be worse. (The answer followed shortly after, proudly showing itself as the The Day My Butt Went Psycho animated series.)

“Would you do it again?” a haunting reporter’s voice asks me now, in 2018. I’ve since learned to be more wary of my media decisions. I’ve grown to trust my own tastes and judgement. It’s not the responsibilities of others to curate the best and greatest media, but my own to decide what to partake in. I think my life since 2013 over. How things have gone since Dude That’s My Ghost! aired.
