Cricket painting #4, WIP.
Got bored, did some more painting. It took about 2/3 of a can of weird apple flavoured beer (?) left behind by a previous roommate before my tremor became manageable. So that's... interesting.
Mad Jackās Gambit.
((IC excerpt shortened a lottttt.))
āRow ya bastarās, row!ā Below deck Greghonās voice boomed forward in command as his burly figure heaved arms forward and backward. The long oars of the crew stretching down to the waves, dipping up then down as they propelled the ship forward. Relying solely off of the strength and willpower of the men aboard now, the ship cut through waves kicking the salty sea back at those within the bowels of the ship, showering them through the portholes. Pained grunts were the only noise made now, a rhythm all itās own as muscles burned to not only keep the pace but to accelerate it.
Tideguard stood on the top deck, unable to fully concentrate, her head continuously swiveled to watch the encroaching enemy ships. Four total took a broad pursuit as they came upon the convoy moving in itās triangle pattern. Her mind was everywhere; were the other ships doing their jobs? How long until the firing begins? How many shots can we take? The rest of the ship moved in unison, perfect harmony to one another but she was utter chaos as she stood, foot tapping furiously on the planks of wood.
Jack however held the opposite reaction. Content, calm, despite the odds being out of favor he couldnāt be more in his element. Then the first volley sounded off. The crack of gunpowder echoed from the distant barrels, igniting within the cylinders an untraceable amount of iron balls shot forward. Overhead, into the water, they all missed serving no other purpose than to gauge distance. As the first wave exploded outwards, Tideguard hunched, hands covering her head as if it would be of any use- yet Jack still stood tall.
They were getting closer. Werenāt they? Were we getting closer? The triangle formation held together, easing to the right as it pulled to the first ship. It originally held faceless men with the distance, mere dots moving above deck to adjust sails and prepare- but as the convoy moved perilously into firing range Tide could see each and every one of the men ready to murder her.Ā
Calm as could be Jack stepped forward, parallel to the young woman as he started to point along the frame of the opposing ship. āSee this hereās whatās wrong with yā kids tāday.ā Hands waving wildly about, Jack shook his head with distaste. āRight, see now, yerā all thinkinā, right, that- Oh biggerās better, anā- mā pretty guns anā big shipās gonā ta be unstoppable, right.ā His voice getting high-pitched as he mocked the new generation of naval novices. āSee here now, bigger, right, means slower- anā yer fancy guns are all nice, right, but they canāt beat the āol razzle dazzle.ā With a furious shake of jazz hands a whistling shot bounded from the allied ship on their starboard side.
A harpoon jutting into the back of the opposing ship connected the two now, a long reinforced cable traced back to the Seeker, Tideguards eyes finding the large ballista-resembling weapon which fired it. Caught like a fish, the crew of the Seeker began reeling in itās quarry, slowing and dragging the ship backwards to allow the Paramount and Imperial to gain the lead.
āAn now their fooked. Should sit down, weāre goinā ta give ām a little kiss.ā Gaining speed, faster and faster their ship, the Imperial, took the lead moving parallel to the second ship, the one formerly ahead of the now tethered galley. As they moved closer and closer, the opposing ship took the free distance to fire- a barrage of cannonballs burst through wood, splintering and sweeping away carts, barrels, and pieces of the ship in a cloud of debris. Now clinging to one of the railings, Tide felt her heart beat through her chest as she stared to Jack, awaiting his next plan of attack.
āPucker up ya mingy whore!ā Jack shouted outwards to the opposing ship before grabbing hold of the nearest heavy object. With his body wrapped tightly around a loose barrel of all things he looked to the crewman awaiting the order and finally barked, āCut!ā only for the word to be echoed off after him, voice after voice carrying the order down below decks. With that, the oars along the right side of the Imperial and Paramount raised, causing the ships to abruptly turn inward, collapsing the broadhead of their bronze, athlit rams to punch into the opposing ships.
The impact shifted everything and everyone on board the four ships. Throwing some men overboard, others slammed into walls and fellow crewmen after being caught unaware. As both ships struck closely to the stern of their targets they remained jutted into them before the next order was given.
Jack had not been saved from the wild tossing either, grip holding firm to the barrel as it went bounding off rails he went rolling with it. Left lying on the floor as the boats stood still, slammed into one another, a single finger pointed skyward with little view other than his boots sticking upwards from where heād landed. āDraw!ā Again the word bounced between every voice aboard the Imperial and Paramount, oars being produced immediately after and pulling them free. With gaping holes now resting in the enemy they quickly began to sink. Rather than staying to continue the fight, Jack knew theyād taken heavy damages themselves and the two remaining enemy ships would gather itās drowning comrades before pursuing them. For now, theyād bought time, and a minor victory.
