#machine lifeform

Recently, as a warm-up, I doodled a little mechanical friend from the NieR franchise. Turns out these dudes make fantastic warm-up models! Of course every time I say “warm-up”, it never really ends up being just a warm up... 

I ended up doing extensive research on the design process behind the machine lifeforms for Automata. The articles I read on it were really informative! I found myself particularly focused in on the creative ways that they were designed to move around, like the way that the smaller machines’ arms were drawn to have a wide range of motion using simplistic asymmetrical joints.  I was also fascinated with just everything regarding Simone’s design! Honestly, I could go on about this for hours...

But I’ll cut to the chase and talk about the drawings now! As I said, I ended up doing quite a bit of research into these designs. That’s because, well obviously I needed a reference. Sure, I could’ve gone off of memory but I am very happy I didn’t-! Drawing these and reading all of the design notes and looking at how these guys were essentially put together for the game really got my inspiration juices flowin’ and I ended up spending like a day and a half on these... TTvTT Though these don’t really look much like your typical artistic studies or anything like that, they proved to be really useful in understanding more angular designs like this! Which I had actually been struggling with for a design project I was working on on the side! Definitely going to apply what I learned drawing these onto that project. I may do some more studies of the larger machines, but we’ll see! I do have a tendency to get distracted...
