June 13th 1752, birth of English novelist, diarist and playwright Fanny Burney. Burney’s novels satirising the social pretensions of English aristocrats and the politics of female identity in the late 18th century, greatly influenced the writings of Jane Austin. In 1789 during the early days of the French Revolution Burney supported the Revolution’s aims, and met and married the exiled French General Alexandre D'Arblay, who had been adjutant-general to the Marquis de Lafayette. From 1760 to 1774 she lived with her family at number 50 Poland Street, which during the 18th and 19th century also housed other notable literary residents such as William Blake who lived at 28 Poland Street from 1785 until 1791, and Percy Byshee Shelley who lived at 15 Poland Street briefly in 1811. William Blake, Percy Shelley, and the events of the French Revolution are all depicted in the historically and steampunk based Industrial Sublime Tarot, a unique tarot deck based upon the years 1760 - 1848. ‘Since loyalty does no man good, Let's steal the King, and outdo Blood! ‘ John Wilmot, 2nd Earl of Rochester On the 9th May 1671, Anglo-Irish officer Colonel Thomas Blood attempted to steal the Crown Jewels from the Tower of London. After integrating himself and his invented family with the Master of the Jewel House, Talbot Edwards, the group led by Blood overcame Edwards; and concealed crowns, spectre’s and orb’s into their clothing. Edwards managed to raise the alarmy, yelling "Treason! Murder! The crown is stolen!". Escaping from the scene Blood and his accomplices fired on the Warders, before they were captured, with Blood declaring, "It was a gallant attempt, however unsuccessful! It was for a crown!” Upon his capture Blood refused to answer to anyone but the King, and he was delivered before King Charles II. The King asked Blood, "What if I should give you your life?", with Blood replying, "I would endeavour to deserve it, Sire!” Amazingly Blood was not only pardoned but also given land in Ireland. An historical speculation for Charles' actions is that he had a respect for audacious scoundrels such as Blood. This can also be seen in Charles’ nickname of ‘Swift Nick’, given to highwayman and rogue John Nevison in 1676. Nevison was hanged for highway robbery on May 4th 1684. ☁️ On Sunday 1st February 1829, York resident Jonathan Martin had a revelation, said to have begun with a dream in which God had given him a vision of a black cloud hovering over the cathedral; on that evening and becoming unstable due to a buzzing sound which emanated from the Cathedral organ, he began what he claimed was the fulfillment of God’s vision to him. He attempted to burn down the medieval Cathedral. 🔥 Hiding in the cathedral after dark, he set fire to the woodwork, and escaped through a window, while the fire began to rage. The next morning the residents of York began to see smoke, and heard the organ playing in a deathly cacophony, which gave a haunting accompaniment to the apocalyptic scene. Despite supernatural claims, the pipes of the organ were acting like chimneys, where the fire was drawn to the roof, and the sound was caused by the escaping air. The fire was finally being extinguished on the 3rd, by which time the roof of the central aisle, and the majority of the woodwork inside was destroyed. It was not long before arson was suspected, especially as Martin had written a series of signed notes in which he slandered the clergy as ‘vipers of Hell’, who had ignored the true meaning of God’s word. Captured on the 6th February, his trial the following month became a national sensation, especially as the trial of the resurrection men Burke and Hare had only taken place two months before, and the public imagination for scandal was already at a high. Held in York Castle, Martin became a spectacle as lines of visitors began to peer through the bars at him in his cell.
