The door opened and closed, followed by footsteps. The bed sank down beside her and she felt a hand lower onto her shoulder.
“Nadia, are you okay?” Through the blur of her tears, Nadia was able to make out Maksim’s shape beside her. She reached up and wiped her eyes, letting out a shaky laugh.
“Yeah,” she sat up slowly, pushing his hand from her shoulder gently. It fell to the blankets underneath them and he studied her. Nadia couldn’t imagine what he saw. Her hair was a mess, her eyes were red from crying, and she was probably shaking. If she hadn’t been, she couldn’t explain why he pulled her into a gentle hug. Her arms wrapped around his waist as her face pressed against the fabric of his shirt.
“I thought you were mad at me,” she said softly, holding the back of his shirt tightly. “I thought you didn’t want to talk to me.”
“Why wouldn’t I want to talk to you?” Maksim asked, tucking her head under his chin.
“Because I lied to you. I didn’t tell you about my job. I didn’t tell you about the palace. You had to ask Veta why I had that bruise.”
“I wasn’t mad at you. I was scared.”
She pulled away, wiping at her eyes again. “You were scared? Why?”
“You showed up with a bruise on your face and had been missing for weeks. Nadia, what did you expect me to think?”
“I don’t know,” she mumbled.
“I wanted to make sure you were safe,” he reached out and stroked her hair gently. “I care about you.”
She knew he did. Things had gotten off to a rocky start, but they were friends now. She tucked her body close to his, wrapping her arms around his waist again.
“Maks, Roza’s gone.” Her voice caught in her throat again.
“I know. I was here the day it happened. I wished I could have told you. But I didn’t know when you were coming home.” His arms wrapped around her shoulders, pulling her closer to him.
“I knew she was sick. I just didn’t know she was that sick…” Nadia’s voice trailed off as she started to cry again.
“I think the journey here was hard on her. She was weak already. That’s what your father said when I asked him.” Maksim’s embrace tightened as her body began to shake.
“I miss her so much,” Nadia held on to his shirt. She knew he wouldn’t leave her, but part of her was scared that if she let go of him, he would disappear too, just like Kolya and Roza.
