In seaside Santa Cruz, California, picturesque backdrops are overshadowed only by picturesque residents — from the glamorous globetrotting gems of modern business, to the housewives’ eleven o’clock wine club, to the stay-at-home moms and dads whose bake sale cupcakes appear plucked from the pages of Good Housekeeping, each of them lead a life picture perfect to the bystander’s eye.

The parents of Little Einstein Day School’s kindergarten class are no exception, with their immaculate projections refusing to be tainted by the scandalous web of secrets and lies that strings them together, betrayals carefully concealed beneath Cartier and Chanel. 

In these circles, everyone knows everyone. Everyone knew Clara Caldwell. And everyone was there when her body was found, bloodied and bruised, strewn across a library chaise in the midst of the yearly back-to-school fundraiser.

In a town like this, the smallest of indiscretions can turn lethal, fatal. Even a little white lie can blacken a soul, drive it to unspeakable lengths — and despite crystalline facades of propriety and integrity, this town hasn’t seen a pure soul in years.

We all have secrets we keep. The only question is — what lengths would you go to for yours?

“have you noticed that he seems... different lately? he’s always been sort of brooding, but it’s escalated now. is it a guilty conscious, or something else? i can’t help but get the feeling he’s hiding something...”

at the time, leyton had been sure that it was time to let the world see the true colors of his relationship with audra and hale. he’d never felt more confident, had never been so ready to stand hand-in-hand with his wife and boyfriend. them versus the world.                                  it wasn’t just the world, though. it was them versus clara. 

for leyton, it affected his life in a good way. his editor began asking if leyton would start a novel, or even better a series, featuring a ployamorous dynamic. the author replied he’d already written it, and was waiting for the best time to release the trilogy.                           whirlwind romance. leyton and his life had always been comprised of 93% stardust and dreams, ambition and sparkling wine. 

     now? his wife had her own life in shattered pieces at his feet, despite her claiming that everything would be fine. that she wasn’t broken, that as long as the three of them were together, everything would be fine. it still felt like guilt, and leyton spent more time writing in dim lighting and ruining his already poor eye sight.

"She's always loved stirring the pot a little bit too much, you know? She was there with Clara all the time, whispering and snickering, and god only knows how much of the shit in this town she's actually responsible for. You know what I think? Clara was getting close to pinning her husband down for... Well, you know what happened to his first wife, the one that she so conveniently replaced. And lord only knows she wasn't about to let her unborn child grow up without a daddy, so... And, like, I know I'm going to get some shit for saying this about a pregnant woman, but hear me out. Pregnancy brain can make you do some crazy things. Some women crave pickles and ice cream, some crave blood."

“Lucy? Oh, you mean Clara's sister. It's amazing how the two of them are related, honestly. Lucy is everything Clara isn't, you know? An amazing mom, a good heart - maybe too good, if you ask me. She's always been a bit timid, letting Clara take the spotlight. I heard her husband isn't exactly the most faithful, either. Maybe one day, she just got sick of taking a back seat to everyone. Maybe she decided there's only room for one of them."
