Calgary-based jewelry designer Lindsay Saunders started Cinder & Sage Designs in 2009. Making jewelry for herself and friends started as a hobby, but soon developed into a successful business. A love of everything old and rustic is evident in her vintage and vintage-inspired jewelry. Her travels in Europe and Southeast Asia have also inspired many of her pieces, including her lockets and Travel Junkie necklace.

Her jewelry has been featured as part of the official gifts at the 2011 Canadian Country Music Awards, in the fashion capsule accessory bar at the 2012 TIFF, and in numerous magazines, including  LOULOU.

We’re excited to have Lindsay as a guest blogger to share how to make your own typography pendant necklace.

SUPPLIES:

A printout of the word you’d like on your pendant, using Lust Script. Make sure to print it out 250 to 300% larger than the size you’d like the finished pendant to be because they shrink a lot when you bake them.

Shrinky Dink plastic sheet. (You can buy a pack of these from most craft stores.)

Sharpie marker

Scissors

Washi tape or masking tape

Kraft paper

Standard hole punch

Jewelry pliers

Jump rings and chain

STEP ONE: Cut a piece of the Shrinky Dink plastic and place it over what you want to trace. Tape it in place so it won’t move around, and trace with a Sharpie. Color in the letters with either your Sharpie, colorful markers, or pencil crayons.

STEP TWO: Using the hole punch, punch holes where you’d like the loops for your chain to go. Cut around the word, leaving a small border. Be sure to go around your hole punches. 

STEP THREE: Place your plastic pieces onto the Kraft paper (fold one corner of the paper to make getting it off the warm baking pan easier). Place into a 325-degree-Fahrenheit preheated oven (or toaster oven) for approximately two minutes. Watch them shrink, curl up, and flatten out again. Once they’ve flattened out, give them another 30 seconds, then remove them from the oven. 

STEP FOUR: If the pendants didn’t flatten out enough in the oven, you can gently press them with a pad of paper or spatula while they’re still warm.

STEP FIVE: Attach your jump rings and chain, and admire your awesome handmade necklace!.

Neil Summerour introduces his own sexy font: " When I developed Lust, it was my overly indulgent attempt to infuse wanton sensuality in a typeface. I wanted to create something that was over the top and veered away from my loose ‘sushi’ scripts and rigid sans serifs. To do that, it had to be, well, a little sexy. For me. the solution was to create a curvy serif. A serif would be a different endeavor for me since I consciously choose not to do many serifs—because there are so many wonderful options already. Because of this, my approach (and design) had to be different. Here’s how I broke down what I felt it needed to have under the covers to create a ‘lusty’ typeface: Lots of contrast, almost demure, coy contrast mixed with the flowing curves of a woman’s body, incomplete, almost teasing ball terminals, and serifs that went on forever… so sharp they would draw blood if you touched them. Well, mission accomplished. But, while I was finishing Lust, the idea of taking it further, making it, well, sexier took hold. The end result is just more… more experience, more curves, more of everything. It looks good dressed down or in a little black dress. Lust Script plays well with others too… it works beautifully within the Lust Series styles and with the new Lust Slim."
