I am the Lumpiest Lumper Who Ever Did Lump
My dog has such a good temperament. Strangers comment on it. Dog trainers comment on it. A a service dog handler commented on it. And yet, for the past month or more, she entered a fear period and I thought her temperament was terrible. I would bring her somewhere new, and she would do fine, but she was squirmier than usual, and then something unexpected would happen and she would bark. And so we would leave. I thought her temperament was bad and that she was overreacting to little unexpected things. But really, the whole situation was strange to her and I had done NOTHING to tell her it was okay. Last week I went to a doctor for TMJ. There was a dentist style chair for me to sit in, and at the beginning I had to leave to get my mouth x rayed. My mom handled her and sat in the chair in the corner with her underneath. She was right next to this weird giant chair she had never seen before with a giant lamp hanging over it, and she was in a corner with no escape. I was giving her treats every so often for staying nicely under the chair, but she had no chance to see anything and I never really told her any of this was okay. I never showed her the dentist chairnwaa okay and I've never really taught her strangers are okay. I just lumped it like I always had because she is such a steady dog that it had always worked. And then the doctor approached the back of the chair to look at my jaw, fully boxing Gloria in. She was trapped between a stranger she had never met and some weird equipment and the wall, alone underneath the wrong handler with me on the other side of the strange man, and so she barked and lunged forward to try to escape. Wow, how reactive of her. What a bad temperament to just ALL OF A SUDDEN bark like that at the slightest provocation after acting totally normal for half an hour. Yeah, this is my fault. I wasn't seeing that she was uncomfortable and I wasn't actually socializing her, just dumping her in new situations and assuming she had trained herself because she was so good in the new situations. Her fantastic temperament covered up her discomfort until a fear period plus more extreme lumping happened. And I just lumped and lumped and put her in situations she wasn't really ready for and she did so well I assumed it was fine until it wasn't. I've socialized her to practically nothing these 9 months. Giving treats in a new situation and then my dog acting fine doesn't mean she's socialized. Now I have to cut back on bringing her new places and figure out how to actually socialize her.
