monkey d. luffy - the boy from apartment 512
cw: fem!reader, modern setting, selfinsert coded
a/n: the selena song by this name is soooo him omg
moving to a new city was going to be rough, you knew this already. an entirely fresh start with a new school when it starts in the fall, new people, and new social ecosystem. but as your mother advised, it wouldn't be all bad.
the apartment you moved into was pretty beat up, but it seemed safe enough. younger kids playing in the courtyard eagerly waved to you and your mother, the new tenants.
apartment 513 was your new home.
you were carrying one of the last boxes left to unpack through the hallway to the unit, when some unseen person bumped into you, causing it to tumble from your hands.
you look up to see a sheepish smile and the sweetest brown eyes you could ever dream of.
"shishishi, sorry about that! you just moved, huh? let me help you!"
the boys grin is blinding, and you don't even get a word in before he's picking up the hefty box like nothing and practically bounding away.
you're barely able to catch up with him, and by the time you're both in the apartment, he's already snooping around curiously.
"oh-um, thank you! can i, uh... know your name?" you as as he's head first in your fridge that's still mostly empty. he comes up for air with a hotdog sausage.
"monkey d. luffy! i live in 512 with my brothers! what about you?" he asks curiously, tilting his head as he takes a bite of the stolen sausage.
you keep it brief, telling him your name and how you just moved here with your mom.
you can't help but admire luffys frame. his red basketball jersey leaves little to the imagination, lean frame pretty much on full display. his shaggy black hair is adorned with the cutest straw hat, rustling cinematically with the light breeze that comes through the open window.
he's somehow cute even while scarfing down a hotdog he stole from your barren fridge.
it's now or never. time to put on your best charm.
you take a step closer to him, playing with the strap of your tank top idly.
"would you mind showing me around?"
luffy is already eagerly grabbing your hand and dragging you out of the unit, past your very surprised mother.
he gives a very quick tour of his own unit, escaping before ace and sabo can interrogate him about the girl he just brought around.
as he tugs you through the hallways of the complex, he gives fleeting explanations of each tenant, some much more flattering than others.
down in the courtyard, he shows the hidden corners in which he hides his treasures (which end up being a collection of little trinkets.) you later find out how much if an honor it is to be shown the secret spots.
the sun is setting, an orange glow on the courtyard that casts the shadow of his long eyelashes across his face.
"um, thank you a lot. for, y'know, showing me around. it was very ... helpful." you smile up at him, swinging the hand that he is still holding back and forth.
"let's hang out again! no one here ever wants to hang out with me." he pouts, adorably.
you quickly decide to remedy that. "i'd love to! you can come over once all the boxes in my unit are unpacked. in the meantime... can i come over to your place?"
a grin that takes up his whole face is your answer.
as summer continues, you find yourself spending about 85% of your time in luffys bed. not in that way, although you wouldn't complain, but simply playing video games, or talking to him, or cuddled up in his arms.
as you lay, alone, on your own bed, you let out a groan of frustration. what are you two? you spend all your time together, you've even spent the night! you for sure thought he was going to kiss you then, hut he knocked out as soon as he hit the bed. which you shared.
does he even want to be more? as far as you know, he is into girls. he just hasn't been into any girls for the time that you've known him, which you're thankful for.
maybe you should just be grateful for his friendship and stop vying for something more.
you're just about to settle into this more mature train of thought until he comes barreling into your room.
"hey! you were supposed to come to my place today." he pouts, kneeling at the edge of your bed.
"crap- sorry, i totally forgot! forgive me, wont you?" you plead as you drape yourself over him, clinging onto his shoulders.
his attempt at hiding the smile that wants to break out behind his stubborn pout is adorable. well, ugly, but in an adorable way.
he picks you up and practically bounds across the hall, tossing you onto his bed and jumping on top of you like a wwe fight.
your sort-of-boyfriend wraps around you securely, legs entangled and face pressed against your chest. out of habit, your hands go to play with his hair, your nails scratching his scalp in a way that makes hum melt and purr against you.
maybe you didn't need to be his girlfriend. maybe this was enough. just friends.
you're on this mature train of thought until once again, you're interrupted as the door busts open.
"luffy! what did we tell you about bringing your girlfriend over!" ace shouts, although the grin on his face tells you that he obviously isn't really angry. he just loves to disturb luffy while you're over.
"aaace!" luffy whines, not happy with the disruption. "to tell you guys..." he answers his brothers question with a pout, although he doesn't loosen his grip on you in the slightest.
the happy rainbows in your head are stills shooting lasers from being called luffys girlfriend, and the boy in question not denying it. you give a little wave from beneath your luffy blanket to ace, and to sabo who is in the doorway behind him happily watching it all go down.
ace rolls his eyes and shuts the door, but not before tossing a condom that luffy carelessly discards to the pile that is growing in his nightstand. this isn't the first time ace has done this, and it certainly isn't the last. but he's never outright called you luffy's girlfriend before.
but, why not? why shouldn't you take charge? it's now or never, and maybe you'll come out of this apartment unit with a boyfriend. or broken heart. you hope and hope for the former.
"so, luffy, quick question, is it cool if i like really officially actually was your girlfriend?" you ramble out, muscles tense beneath him.
luffy looks up at you, blankly.
well, that would make more sense. you'll celebrate this win in a moment, for now you need answers.
"i was hoping so, but you never really officially asked me to be your girlfriend."
he narrows his eyes for a moment, visibly thinking.
"ohhh, you're right!" he grins, laughing at his own forgetfulness. "i totally thought i did! will you be my girlf–"
you can't wait any longer. the kiss is messy, with too much teeth, and you're both smiling into it too much for it to really be a kiss, but it's no matter.
making out with luffy really is an experience. he kisses like the air is toxic and your mouth is the only source of oxygen. his exploring hands make you breathless and ticklish at the same time. feeling up his abs could nearly make you faint.
sabo calls out that lunch is ready. luffy flinches against you, as if about to run off out of reflex. but in the same moment, he melts back against you, not ready to stop devouring your lips yet.
no one else needs to know when you fell for each other. or where he hides his treasure. or how many condoms you two filled with yogurt to throw at his brothers.
because those are secrets you keep in between the lips that are steadily fused to luffy's.
