christine sucks in a breath as the screen freezes on a wide-shot of the courtroom, captain pike and spock’s small figures compared to the aliens surrounded from all sides as the two warring factions from the neighbouring planets frozen mid-shouting match. the screen flickers, black for an interminable moment before returning to life, mercifully on a shot of their still uninjured friends.

The weight on his shoulder is unexpected–more than unexpected. Rare. Like a butterfly landing on you, and you have to stay so still so it doesn’t fly away. If she were someone else, he might rest his cheek against the top of her head and let himself rest too. It’s been a long, difficult few days. He hasn’t processed everything, and that’s just stacked on top of all the other stuff he hasn’t had a chance to process.

That’s what being in Starlfeet is, though, isn’t it?

“You ever notice how Chris isn’t champing at the bit to come on missions like this?” 

Sam’s been taking samples for so long the sun’s starting to come up. The materials they’re trying to capture are so extremely sensitive that the equipment takes forever on each step of cutting it out of the ground. Can’t transport, can’t move too fast, can’t use force fields to keep it safe. It’s taken a lot of trial and error to find a way to get it out.

He sighs and pulls up the protective goggles and hood. The dawn on this planet might be beautiful, but the sun’s radiation is a little too much for human skin to tolerate.

Pollux holds up one hand in mock surrender--the other still holding his staff. It’s a risk, certainly, but she didn’t kill him when she last had the chance, and it’s his belief that she won’t now.

If he’s wrong, he’ll doubt he’ll have much time to reprimand himself in any case.

“ i heard a new tale about you today, ” the hearth crackles in the corner, lighting the room in soft golden and reds, trying futilely to paint some color into her dark outfit. “ quite a story, actually. we can add a new title to your names: the slayer of dragons. ” bringing a cup to his lips, he grins, blue eyes sneaking a glance at her. “ by next week, you’ll have saved a princess. ”

“Like what?” A blink, sure, she was trying to get out of this conversation because it wouldn’t help right now. It wouldn’t make anything easier, wouldn’t get them out of here faster, wouldn’t solve any of their problems. “Oh.” Yeah, okay, maybe the penny dropped that she wasn’t going to get away with complete and utter denial. Her eyes flickered down to her leg, that was the issue with black pants, it was kinda hard to see the damn blood on them, but Tilly could feel it.

Adrenaline was still helping with the pain, that was the thing about crashing into a planet and almost dying it really helped your sympathetic nervous system get ramped up. “Yeah, I think I like, something hit me when we crashed,” a shrug of her shoulder. Honestly. A few years ago she might have freaked out…but everything since Discoveries loss felt. Muted. At least emotionally. It wasn’t that it didn’t hurt, she just no longer saw the point in talking or complaining about it.
