In all my years playing DnD, with all the many characters Iâve played, Iâve never attempted roleplaying romance in game....until now. And let me tell you, it was a disaster.
My husband is my DM, so youâd think romancing an NPC wouldnât be that weird, right? Wrong.
Killian is my level 12 fighter/wizard with a modest background. A big lovable nerd with a hunger and thirst for knowledge, and also for comfort food/drink. An all-around good guy, but so bad in social situations.
Miri is a sweet NPC cookâs apprentice, hand-picked by a matchmaking Beholder as Killianâs ideal mate, both in body and soul. (But Killian flubbed that encounter and wound up marrying the slick, noble-born elven rogue in his party, instead of his intended, though the marriage isnât valid in this realm.) Aside from that, Killian knows very little about Miri.
Killian began showing up for lunch daily at the cat cafe where Miri works so that he could see and talk to her. The upon finding out that he and his party would be leaving on yet another dangerous quest, as adventurers do, he went once again to tell her, and to confess his feelings. The whole party tagged along, including the rogue he had married in the Beholderâs realm.
He confessed his feelings. Miri said she liked him too, and that she would be off work before dinnertime, if weâd still be around. He shouldâve just left it at that and said goodbye. But he ordered some soup. Soup that Miri made. And he gave her a gift.
I forgot to actually have Killian buy a gift, so I had him give her the book he had just finished reading... The Lusty Argonian Maid. A smut novel rated 5 stars by Killian, for the plot of course.
Miri accepted the gift at Killianâs high praise for the book, but tentatively.
The soup arrived and Killian tried it, but on a roll from 1-20, he rated it only a 3. He decided to be polite and tell her her soup was delicious.... and rolled a Deception check of 3...minus 2. Ugh. Needless to say, she saw right through that.
Then Killian showed off by cleaning the soup bowls using the Prestidigitation cantrip, and fled.
...The rest of the afternoon was stressful, as the party was essentially told they were being sent to do the impossible, potentially facing many powerful wizards in an even more powerful wizardâs lair. We were basically deemed dependable, but expendable enough for the job. In the moment, I, as a player, totally forgot about some of the earlier happenings with Miri, and Killian went to spend the evening getting shit-faced at the bar, and write a letter home in case it was his last. And when the DM confirmed that I did, indeed, intended to drink enough to be quite drunk, this happened.
Killian feels a hand on his shoulder as heâs sitting at the bar. He turns, and itâs Miri.
Killian: âShit!â *stumbled to his feet to face her* âMiri! What are you doing here?â
Miri: âWell I told you when Iâd be off work, and you told me where you were staying so....If itâs a bad time, I can just go.â
Killain: âI... uh.... thought I offended you... Â Well youâre here now, you can stay if you want to.â
Miri: âNo... Not like this. Iâll just go.â
Killian: *falls in to hug her before she can go.*
Miri patted his back awkwardly, and Killian rolled a 2 for how heâd proceed, so he started to sob drunkenly on her shoulder.
Miri: â...You can talk to me about whateverâs going on after youâve sobered up...â *breaks away from the hug and leaves.*
Killian hesitates, then staggers to follow her, but he couldnât see which way she went. Probably for the best.
The next morning, the innkeeper hands Killian a package. From Miri. Itâs a Tankard of Sobriety...
HORIZON WALKER RANGERÂ - Wildhunt SHIFTER - Sage (Researcher)
Never built a Shifter before, but I play a weretiger in my main campaign, so I enjoyed this quite a lot. I think it shows. I ended up with a lot more details than I usually cram into these posts. I mainly try to leave enough space for DMs and players alike to build up on the general idea I came up with. This time... Inspiration hit me hard and I couldnât help myself. Hope you enjoy.
Name: Ichor (likes the nickname Corey better) (18yo)
TAROTS
Mind: Justice (upright) Truth and integrity as the core of an horizon walkerâs mind are perfectly okay with me, honestly. It really tells me that Corey is a person that strives to reach a balance into things, that he knows every action has its consequences. I can see them as someone that is perfectly aware of how they can change the world just by existing and making decisions, so they try to weigh their actions because of it. But they also enjoy watching the ripples that every drop in the water causes. So they dislike inaction too. Why stay still when you can do something and be part of the reason for the world to move and change, just to settle and come back to a new balance?
Body: Two of swords (upright) I mean, a tarot about being torn between two people or in general this feeling of disconnection on his body? Of course I could just stop at the obvious issues Ichor could have with being a shifter. But why stop with something as obvious as emotional denial, when thereâs an underside of something more? I had to draw a card to try and clear this up. And the Three of swords reversed confirmed there was more. Corey is actually in emotional denial about something deeper, but heâs slowly getting over it. Still, this doesnât get rid of that âsomethingâ that hurt him in the past and Ichor tries to bury it more often than not. So, I would say that this disconnection to his body is more in tune to this denial.
Spirit: the High Priestess (upright) Most of all, I would say this expresses his thirst for knowledge, thatâs for sure. But Iâm not surprised by that hint of mystery and sensuality that comes from Corey himself. Despite how socially awkward he is, I can picture him being unknowingly charming. Which is probably why he doesnât trust people that try to be very direct in showing romantic interest. Well, I suppose he can be considered charming at least to people that are into dark, mysterious, dorky nerds with enormous trust issues. I know that the broody types always attract some people's attention.
My firbolgs reaction to being questioned by the noble, whether it was him, who convinced 12 birds to scope out his manor thru an empty window

"You smell like board games."
âThe first time I did a low charisma run in New Vegas I was appalled with how people treated the Courier. It gave me a very different view of the people of the Mojave - people who didnât just blindly agree to your terms or offer their help at every turn. It was a whole new wasteland.â
