    robin had left roland in the care of regina mills for the time being. he didn’t mind too much, he was growing to see the woman as his mother, or at least she was the closest thing he had to a mother figure. plus henry was great. the only problem was storybrooke had just as many scary things as the enchanted forest or any other realm. maybe it wasn’t exactly a living shadow, or a flying monkey but things were still scary.  that’s why his little feet carried him, stuffed monkey in hand, out of bed at the first sign of a thunderstorm. not finding regina in her bed yet, but henry sound asleep, he wandered down stairs to check her office and sure enough that’s where he found her. “Regina?” he mutters nervously, stuffed monkey held tightly to his body.

Attitude about children changes depending on her stage in life. Young Cora is kinda indifferent to kids. She’s neither mean to them nor overly warm. She’s focused on herself in the way you’d expect someone between 18-24 to be. She doesn’t dislike kids and fully expects to have them once she’s married, but that’s kinda the kicker there- being married.

Obviously we know she gets pregnant, and it really does kinda come down to bad timing. Cora wasn’t ready to be a mother yet, and didn’t have the resources to do so anyways. It wasn’t that she didn’t love Zelena, or didn’t like or want kids in general- but she didn’t want them at that time. 

Fast forward a bit- heartless Cora, and Regina is born. At this stage of her life Cora has realized her own dream of being Queen isn’t gonna happen. Regina becomes the vessel for that dream, and Cora’s attitude about children is reflective of that. The way she treats Regina, however, is pretty different from how she would likely treat other children. We see this both with young Snow and young Zelena- Cora turns up the warmth, she’s sweet with them (or tries to be), she’s encouraging, she seems every bit the kindly maternal figure. And that’s generally how she behaves around children unless circumstances dictate otherwise.

Cora can turn cold in an instant- but she’ll only do so if she feels its necessary (i.e., sending Zelena back to Oz in the manner that she did.) Cora also will not kill children. She’s not above harming them, or abusive behaviors. But she does not and will not murder a child. (I know that’s not a very high bar of goodness here.)

Fast forward again- Cora with her heart back. At this phase of life she’s sad, much older, and tired. Her children and grandchildren are the only legacy she’s going to leave behind that she’s even remotely proud of at this point, and so they become the most precious thing to her. All that energy she used to channel into her ambitions and goals now gets funneled into her family. With her grandchildren in particular, Cora sees a second chance. She’s everything she wasn’t to Regina and Zelena with them- warm, loving, and as supportive as she knows how to be. (Not all of the critical nature is gone.)
