A review for Serpent and Dove by @shelbymahurin . . . Sarah J. Maas was right, Serpent and dove is truly a gem of a book. I loved everything about it. Lou the female protagonist is such a high spirited character. She is a witch hailing from a coven called the Dames Blanches. With her confident and sassy personality she had my complete admiration immediately. After learning about her past, about how her mother had tried to kill her in order to complete a spell to decimate the royal bloodline, she had my utmost respect. In order to hide from her mother she had to take drastic measures, like marrying her enemy Reid, who was a chasseur (witch hunter). Being a witch it was her only option to stay hidden from her mother and be safe. Reid, the male protagonist, is swoon worthy. He's described as a handsome, honourable giant with anger issues. When his mentor, the Archbishop proposed him to marry Lou, he accepted it without hesitation and what suprised me most was that, even though he was in love with someone else he still honoured the vows he made to Lou and took care of her as a devoted husband would. I took my time devouring this book slowly, plot twist after plot twist hitting me hard every single time. The enemies to lovers troupe with the sparkling chemistry is just to die for. 𝕾𝖊𝖗𝖕𝖊𝖓𝖙 & 𝕯𝖔𝖛𝖊 - @shelbymahurin I’ve been impatiently waiting for this book ever since Shelby announced in a certain fb group that she’d sold it months and months ago. When it finally arrived, I had to wait yet another week to read it. 24 hours later, I’ve completely devoured it, and it was so. worth. the. wait!! The characters are fantastic and the story left me desperately wanting more. I loved Lou’s vulgarity and cheek and her incredibly kind heart despite herself. My heart burst for Reid as he opened up and finally saw the the world beyond his Chasseur uniform and we got more of his precious lop-sided grin. The perfectly complicated relationships these characters had with love, friendship, family, religion felt all too relatable and real. It also had an entirely new take on the way magic works within the world. It wasn’t just simple spells or magic wands, the Dames Blanches and Dames Rouges showed us a whole new system of balance and blood. I have been reading books about witches and magic since I was a small child and it was refreshing to be shown a new world. As I struggle to emerge from this book hangover, I now start the countdown to the next book in the series (oh Mother!) and anxiously await more adventure with Lou, Reid, Coco, and who could forget our precious sweet bb, Ansel.
