Not to be "too woke" or something but it truly gives me so many bad vibes that out of all the random ass characters they would get one of the only fat characters from G1 to be the evil reveal antagonist of the comics instead of the like million of antagonistic characters they had already.
Oh thank my dark lord someone else said it!
I wasnāt going to say it, because I was worried it would sound like Iām being overly sensitive about fat characters - like I usually am.
But THANK YOU! Kind soul! For speaking up!
Yes, this DOES Rub me the wrong way! I LOVE the idea of using an obscure character from the G1 Webisodes as a villain! Conceptually? I love it.
But why Lothar!? There was nothing antagonistic about him, he wasnāt even mad Howleen rejected him, he was just kinda bummed.
Itās weird they pick the ONE chubby boy character we got & turn him into a villain⦠not even just a standard villain, he murdered someone! It makes Moanica killing the power & Toralei betraying the fear leaders & Nefera black mailing Cleo seem like⦠well, childās play.
I think the most serious villains we had besides them were Van Hellscream - who was really awful but he didnāt kill anyone as far as I recall. He did turn Bloodgood to stone but she got better.
Komos comes pretty close but heās from G3 and while he wanted to kill everyone, he didnāt.
Moanica had every intention of killing someone- but sheās from G2 and Tash was already dead & almost only counts in Horseshoes, Landmines & Hand grenades.
Lothar actually murdered someone and he implicated a minor⦠even though he is also a minor⦠I donāt know how that would play out legally.
While Iām very tickled they made sweet little Lothar a villain, itās kinda sus it was him. Heās chunky & short and other things that arenāt āidealā for males but heās the one whoās evil?
No sir, I donāt like it.

The biggest problem I'M having with the IDW Monster High comic is, what the fuck do you mean there's a secret cabal to control monsters' minds to make an arm to fights human and Moanica D'Kay is just one of their victims and not the one LEADING it?!
And it's fucking LOTHAR & MANNY TAUR THAT'S ACTUALLY LEADING IT ALL?!?!
THIS is why I'm annoyed by all the G2 hate cause I feel like they didn't go all in with Moanica here because she's from G2 and "G2=Bad" and they don't want to do anything by pay lip service to it!
Like apparently the next arch is gonna be Spelldon and Valentine going through the multiverse and I'm afraid they'll just skip over G2 entirely! Or if they do mention it'll be in a, "Haha, look how stupid THAT was" kind of way that I HATE!
Course they couldn't reference either G2 or G3 at all but I feel that's damn waste if they're going through the multiverse with a multi-generation franchise!
I guess we'll just have to wait and see but I'm still mad about this Moanica thing!

The Defenders of the Earth - Lothar, Mandrake the Magician, Flash Gordon, and The Phantom - by Rafael Kayanan.
Halloween is our favorite time of year. Here's Jim Henson with Lothar from the Great Santa Claus Switch in Jim's workshop office, 1972
Defenders of the Earth (why does the setup sound like fanfic?)

In the early days of syndicated comics (you see kids, comics used to be sent to newspapers to be published instead sent to a website for you to download!), serialized adventure strips were fairly common. In what I assume was an effort to gain readership of these strips, King Features Syndicate (one of the largest daily comics distributors at the time) decided to work with Marvel Entertainment to bring three of their most popular strips to the small screen:
Flash Gordon, an athlete from Earth (what sport? It varies. Originally, he was a polo player, but Iāve seen a basketball player, runner, and quarterback) that was transported to the planet Mongo where he fights the tyranny of its ruler (more on him later)
Mandrake the Magician, master of illusions powerful enough to fool even machines.
Mandrakeās partner (and muscle when illusions arenāt enough), Lothar
The Phantom (AKA āThe Ghost Who Walks) is a legacy hero, with the mantel passing through the generations since the 16th century. As such, many believe the Phantom to be either immortal or a spirit. He has the ability to channel animal spirits and speak telepathically to animals.
But these heroic individuals arenāt the only ones Defending the Earth. They have kids!
Flashās son Rick Gordon is a battle-fardened warrior despite his young age
Jedda Walker is the daughter of the Phantom and has a telepathic link to her panther friend Kisa.
Lotharās son, LJ (Iām assuming thatās short for Lothar Junior) and has a knack for finding trouble (as in he finds those causing it)
While not Mandrakeās biological son, KāShen is his ward.
There are two other unofficial members of the Defenders:
Zafi is a creature from Mongo who befriended Rick and is pretty much the Defendersā mascot.
Flashās wife Dale Arden is killed by Ming in the first episode, but her consciousness is transferred to a data crystal that Rick uses as the personality for the Defendersā computer.
But enough about Our Heroes, letās talk about Our Villains:
Ming the Merciless is the ruler of the planet Mongo, but heās depleted its resources, so heās turned his attention to conquering Earth for its resources!
With teenagers in the Defenders, the writers decided with they needed to fight someone their own age so that Mingās forces didnāt seem too incompetent, so Ming has a son named Kro-Tan (whatever happened to Princess Aura? Did Ming execute her?), who often tries to usurp his fatherās throne. Did he learn nothing from his late sister?
The plots obviously revolve around the Defenders attempts to thwart Mingās latest scheme to conquer the planet.
The series lasted for one season. Unfortunately, while many of the target audience may have heard of Flash Gordon (since the film was released 6 years earlier), odds are none of the others were familiar (I know that when I read the Funny Pages, I tended to gloss over the adventure strips)
If you would like to watch the series, itās available on Amazon Prime or behind your favorite paywall. If you would like to see an episode reviewed, please let me know!
