——- Eddie hardly believed the stories the other kids in Derry had been spinning. A clown terrorizing their sleepy little town? It sounded like something out of a comic book, some spooky story people told to help them rationalize the irrational.
He didn’t believe it until it happened to him. Although it wasn’t a clown, not at first at least. It was his brother, and then a monster. Both twisted and broken and stunk of death. He just ran, he ran, and he didn’t look back. Not even when he fell and could feel the wet hands grasping at his shirt collar. He just bolted, ignoring the pain and the aching he felt in his body as he made a break for the light.
It wasn’t until he stumbled into the street, heard the screeching of tires, and felt the grit of asphalt under his that reality started to settle in. He was ushered into the passenger side of a large truck, Eddie unspoken and still staring down at the ground.
Something caught his eye, at the corner of the park he had just fled from, a single, red balloon stuck in a tree. His eyes scanning until he finally saw it, in the shadows just enough that it was hard to see it, but he saw it. A smiling clown.
Bloody and bruised, Eddie sat in the waiting room of a hospital. The friendly truck driver who brought him in had left some time ago he guessed, Eddie didn’t really remember coming here or how long he’s been here. He just stared down at the cast he had that went from his wrist to his shoulder. Not exactly ideal for a writer.
His mother hadn’t the time to come get him, and he wouldn’t dare ask his stepfather if he wanted to keep his other arm. So Eddie was waiting for them to tell him he could just leave, they had to let him eventually.
He heard a woman yelling (or well, scolding more likely) and looked up towards the commotion. He recognized her, yeah, Mrs. K. Which meant. . .
Eyes scanning over towards a boy sitting alone, looking just as dirty and disheveled as Eddie himself did. A weird sight considering Kaspbrak was one of the biggest germaphobes Eddie Corcoran had ever met.
He got up, making his way over and sitting next to Eddie, not saying anything for a minute.
❝ . . .Having the same name wasn’t good enough for us, now we had to go and get matching casts. ❞ A light-hearted joke for a terrible situation.
