Gloucester & the breweries
Cities like Gloucester saw a flurry of new pubs as the expansion of the railways in the 19th century helped brewers to distribute their wares more widely. These three are:
The Old Robin Hood - a Stroud brewery pub. Closed 1977 and now residential.
The Vauxhall Inn - extravagant showpiece for Mitchell & Butlers as it expanded into the South West. Closed 2005, now an independent supermarket.
The New Pilot Inn - a Godsell brewery pub. The plasterwork above the door is of the brewery livery (hand clasping malt shovel) and motto (Work & Honour). Closed between 2012 & 15? Now student accommodation.

The George and Henry, originally the George Inn in the 1850s, was once linked to the George Brewery before later being owned by Crowley’s Alton Brewery. It lost its licence in 1903 but regained it after a successful appeal. The pub closed permanently in the 1930s and was later converted into a private residence.

Located in the Redbridge area of the city, this pub had been the property of Eldridge Pope's Dorchester Brewery since 1934. Originally known as the Anchor Inn, the pub dates back to 1812 when brewer William Seagrim acquired the lease of the building. It was for many years a staging post on the busy road to the west from Southampton and, in its earlier days, the annual manorial court for the manors of Millbrook and Nursling was held here. When the pub was altered and extended in 1973, a priests hole was discovered, indicating that parts of the building date back to Tudor times it became a listed building in 1981 because of its special historic interest. The pub is currently closed.
The Fitzhugh Ale House ( The Corner Post ) 81 Milton Road, Southampton, SO15 2JD
This pub which stands on the corner of Milton Road and Holt Road was known as the Fitzhugh Ale House until 1981 after the Fitzhugh family who owned the nearby Banister Park Estate. Later the pub was named The Corner Post as the result of a competition held by the regulars to find a new name for the pub. The pub is now a private residence.
The Bell & Crown 40 Melbourne Street Southampton SO14 5FB
This pub stood on the corner of Melbourne Street and the Standford Street in the Chapel area of the city. Dating back to the early 1850’s it’s address was 5 Standford Street and was called the British Queen. The pub was later brought by the local authorities under a compulsory purchase order for redevelopment of the property on the 27th January 1966. The building was later demolished.
