A Farmer With Fire: a Linked Universe fanfiction
Lorand didn't think much of the dragon when the farmer began telling them about it, it was just another beast to him.
"She's such a sweet dragon! She was gentle with the children, and protected our farms from predators and thieves. I don't know what came over her all of the sudden!" The farmer lamented to the nine hero's plus Lorand/Vine.
"Has anyone new come by recently? Or more monsters in the area?" Asked Legend with his hand on his hip.
"Not that I know of! I mean I haven't seen any around," the farmer raised his hands in an exasperated shrug, "And I don't go to town often enough to know about new travelers, and when I do go, I just talk about work!"
"This guy isn't helping," Lorand told Vine through shared thought, "And we're wasting time!"
"Pay attention, son," Vine's voice was dipping into monotone territory, hinting that Lorand needed to straighten up.
"It's okay sir," Warriors stepped up, "we're just asking to cross off some possibilities as to why your dragon friend turned wild."
"Sometimes it's random wizards disguising themselves as travelers looking for power or to cause chaos," Four interjected.
"If that's the case then, ask the guardsmen at the entrance of Nacole Town. They chat up people when checking them in."
"We will do that kind sir, and hopefully we'll find answers to help your friend," Warriors did a slight bow to the farmer and the farmer returned the gesture before turning back down the path to his house.
Lorand had already begun his hobble down the road when Wind called out to the farmer, "Oh yeah! What's your dragon friend's name?"
The farmer turned and answered, "Her name is Sahara."Â
Lorand tripped and fell in the dirt road drawing everyone's attention to him. "That has to be a coincidence! In no way is it possible! It couldn't be!" He quickly turned and using his power, he lifted himself off the ground not caring that the farmer saw, "What did you call her?" His face showed shock while his body looked ready to attack. His comrades looked on in surprise and some of them, concern. The farmer backed up a few feet remaining speechless, shocked at seeing Lorand's power. But Lorand grew impatient and flew over to the farmer and grabbed him by his shirt, "What did you call her!?" He yelled at the man. Twilight, Time, and Warriors quickly ran and pulled the teen off the frightened farmer, "What does she look like!?" He yelled more.
"Lorand!" Time and Vine shouted, "Controle yourself!"
"Get off of me!" Lorand blasted them off and they fell on their backs, causing the rest of the party to move and help them up. Before Lorand could make another move, Vine brought him back to the ground on his hands and knees.
"You are acting a fool, Lorand!" Vine yelled in the teens head. His bones felt like they were cracking, causing him to fall over in pain.
"He-he's a wizard??" The farmer said pointing a finger at the teen. Then he turned angry, "Are you the one who caused Sahara to act vicious? Are you the one who disrupted our peace?!" He moved to attack Lorand, but the boy jolted his head up glaring at the farmer, who stopped in his tracks.
"You dare think I would do that to her?" Lorand growled through clenched teeth.
"Both of you stop!" Time stepped in between them before anything else could happen. Then he stared down at Lorand with disapproval and spoke in a low voice, "Apologize to him, Lorand."
The hundred yard stare that made even Twilight uncomfortable. The stare that brought on shame when one acted disgracefully. Lorand looked down as he felt the shame and disappointment coming from the old man, and Vine felt Lorand's conviction and began to ease up on him. The teen pushed himself up with his good arm but stayed kneeling as he apologized, "I'm sorry sir for attacking you."
"Tss fine wizard," the farmer mumbled, "But I don't want to see you here again!"
"But please!" Lorand pleaded as the farmer turned, "What does Sahara look like?"Â
"What's that to you?" The farmer said over his shoulder.
"Well," Hyrule butted nervously, "We need to identify her if we come across her or other dragons."
"Well, I guess that's fair, though I don't think there are any other dragons around. Oh! I have a painting of her that I commissioned an artist to do! I'll be back!"
"We could go with you instead so you don't have to make another trip back to your house," Wild suggested.
"You do have a point there, but I don't want that wizard near my house, or left alone with my herds," the farmer crossed his arms and glared at Lorand who hadn't moved.
"I'll stay with him," the ranch hand, Twilight, volunteered.
"Will one be enough?" The farmer raised an eyebrow.
"I believe it will be," Time said, noting the lack of movement from the boy.
"Alright then, follow me," the remaining eight hero's followed the farmer to his abode, leaving Twilight and Lorand behind, who still didn't move.
"What are we going to do with you, son?" Vine spoke out loud so that Twilight could hear.
"Hey, you okay?" Twilight gently nudged Lorand with his boot, testing his safety as it were.Â
"I wasn't expecting that," Lorand finally said.
"I don't think anyone was expecting you to react like that at all," Twilight squatted down next to the teen and placed a hand on his shoulder, "So, what happened? Who's Sahara?"
Lorand looked up to the blue sky dotted with clouds, and listened to the breeze through the trees and insects hidden in the grass. "She was my adopted older sister." He felt the tears in his eyes and levitated away to the fence.
Twilight was left in his position, confused and with many questions, then finally asked, "Your parents adopted a dragon and raised her as a human kid?"
Lorand snorted a laugh, "Kinda yes and no," his voice cracked. He took in a few breaths to steady himself, thus Vine continued for him.
"Sahara was born to dragons, but could shape shift into a human," Twilight moved to stand next to Lorand, and stared at the necklace hanging around the boy’s neck: a beaten silver plate with an emerald in the middle, where Vine’s voice originated from. "When she was born, her tribe had this prophecy that a human would come from dragons and release those trapped in the Darkened Dome."
"So they placed her in the dome and Vine here brought her to my parents," Lorand concluded.
"Were you already born at this point?" The rancher asked, leaning on the fence.
"No. She was ten years older than me by the time I came around."Â
They suddenly heard running feet, and turned to see their comrades sprinting away from the farmer. "RUN!" Wind yelled, who had a look of shock on his face .
"What did you guys do?!" Twilight shouted as he hurried over to Epona.
"The farmer got mad that I took a picture of the painting!" Wild held up his shieka slate.
"You did what?!" Lorand sprung up filled with hope, and floated beside the heroes.
"He sure did!" Legend shouted, "Then the farmer accused him of being a wizard and brought out a fire rod and is trying to toast us!"
"What?!" Twilight looked back at the farmer and saw in his hand, indeed, a fire rod, and he was pointing it at them.
"NEVER COME NEAR MY HOME AGAIN YOU EVIL DOERS!" Fire erupted forth as fast as dragon's breath, catching up to the heroes. Lorand created a shield to block the blast and Legend pulled out his ice rod to combat the flames, creating steam.
"What a day this is turning out to be!" Legend grunted out.
"It's a Wednesday!" Lorand replied.
"Do you have any more fancy tricks up your sleeves? He's not giving up!"
"I have few ideas!" Hopefully it doesn't hurt the guy too bad. Lorand molded the shield so the steam rolled back onto the farmer, who began to yelp with pain and doused his fire rod, in turn, gave Lorand the opportunity to summon it to his hand safely and gave it to Legend as they raced to rejoin the others.
After they had slowed down and were a ways off, Warriors let out some of his own steam, "Well, that could've gone better!" He wore an exasperated expression.
"I'll say," Wind piped up, though slightly amused by the whole interaction.
"I don't think that guy likes anything out of the ordinary," Wild patted his slate.
"Which is strange considering he had a fire rod and was friends with a dragon," Hyrule wiped his brow of the sweat that accumulated from his run.
"Speaking of which," Twilight hung back to be in line with Wild, "You got a picture of the dragon?" Lorand hovered over Wild's right shoulder to see the picture.
"Sure did," Wild took his slate out and opened up his album to the most recent picture of a painted dragon. Overall rust color scales with bronze accent scales starting from her nose and splitting off into two lines going down her neck, back and ending at her tail, giant shoulder and knee guard bronze scales, folded up wings and two horns curling back. Her neck when facing her straight was ivory going down, lining her underside, and was accented with three golden curly cues. With her head tilted to the side, one could see a warm smile that went up into her eyes and it pierced Lorand's heart.
"It's her," he said more to himself, but everyone heard and turned to look at him, "She's alive!"
