#local frogs

I spoke too soon! I saw a toad friend out tonight (whom I herded out of the path of foot traffic) and heard another singing in the woods behind my workplace! I'll share the photo later - this phone won't change from text to image posting.

I saw some toads last week! The American Toads were singing by the river! If I can work out how to share the photos and video I took without making all the websites mad or stalk me, then I will! So the toads I saw were at the same time the others were singing. One toad I’m pretty sure was a Fowler’s Toad, which would be why toad wasn’t joining in the song time, but the other may have been a female who was done for the night or a hybrid, as American and Fowler’s toads do make hybrid toads on occasion (which are fully fertile, because reasons). But at least two lumpy jumpies! I should be able to share the photos at least! The locals are awake and doing well, though it’s chilly this week so I probably won’t see them again for a while.

The local frogs are all asleep under the mud to wait out the cold and sometimes my body tries to join them in this endeavour. But I do not have the body sustenance for that long of sleeps.

When it’s been wet recently, it’s been too windy for the frogs to come up from the river. I do sometimes hear a couple voices in the distance at night - an American Toad or a Cope’s Grey Tree Frog - but largely it’s been too dry or windy. I’ve seen lots of bugs about at night (I sometimes dodge clouds of them), so I imagine the froggies are getting good food wherever they are.

Too chilly for the frogs tonight - none out singing or chasing bugs (hardly any bugs out either). I heard from a coworker they were out Monday night though! It’s still spring; frogs aren’t in too much of a hurry.
