Bloodstained Hands and a Haircut (mimzomworld story)
part three of the sickfic arc!! (was originally meant to be âprey collection,â but it changed while i was writing)
contains: animal death (live prey), gore, past food insecurity/starvation, young (nonhuman) whumpee, bathing/washing, parental caretaker
â˘â˘â˘
âWhat are you doing, pup?â Ey jump, whapping eir hand down on something.
Slowly, almost nervously, ey show Deathstalker. Present a little bug to nem. In the palm of eir hand. A spider. âDo you want live prey?â
Shoving the spider into eir mouth, ey clap eir hands together.
At midday, Rainchaser brings in a live rabbit. The pup shoves it into a drawer. Hides it.
âNo,â Rainchaser says firmly. âWe donât play with food. We eat it.â
âLater,â ey croak, and Deathstalker bares nir teeth at thon for making em speak.
âIâll get a hunter to bring you prey every day.â Thon ruffles eir hair. âBut you have to eat it. You have to promise not to let it suffer.â
Nir pup takes the rabbit out of the drawer. Scrambling away from em, it burrows under the bed.
Ey stick eir hand under the bed, flushing it out. Lunge, claws slamming down on itâ
CRUNCH.
Gore seeps into eir shirt, Deathstalkerâs shirt, staining it. Ey stiffen.
âItâs okay,â ne says gently. âI can get you a new shirt after youâre done.â
âIf I ruined one of your nice shirts, youâdââ
âIsnât it well past time for you to sleep?â ne asks, ignoring the fact that neâs awake too.
Nir pup sits on the floor, carefully licking blood off eir fingers. The rabbit is a pile of bloody fur and lightly nibbled bones on the floor.
Ey peel off eir shirt, putting it in eir mouth to try and get some blood out. To eat it. Rainchaser gives nem a look ne firmly ignores. Eyâre a pup, of course ey get special treatment. And ne never really liked that shirt much.
âI can bring you jerky,â thon says. âItâll last longer than live prey.â
Ey tear a hole in the shirt with eir teeth. Ne tries not to wince.
âThatâs nice,â ne says, pulling eir hair away from eir face. âYouâll get fresh food and something to keep that wonât make any noise.â Or get dirty, but nir pup wouldnât worry about that. Not when ey were saving food to avoid starving.
Rumbly gives Pup a bath.
Trying not to chirp about the hands in its hair, it leans into the touch. The water turns red. Its hair was loose so thereâs blood in it.
If blood in its hair means baths, means warm water, it might be worth being messy. And keeping its hair. Maybe.
It pulls at its hair. It keeps touching its neck, and it doesnât want anything touching its neck, but if itâ
âPup? Do you want me to cut your hair?â It stares at its hand.
It stares at its hand, wrapped around a ripped-out chunk of hair.
It lets go, and takes thonâs hand. Places the hair in thonâs hand.
Rumbly pointsâ âThis short, or shorter?â
It gestures to a spot under its ear. Hears metal slide on metal as its head gets lighter. âYou know,â Rumbly says softly, âitâs bad luck to make thread like this. From the hair of hurt pups.â
Does that mean it will always be bad luck for thon?
âNot like that, Pup. The hair doesnât grow right, and it holds all those bad memories. Itâs bad luck to use that to make things for the people you love and care about. Because itâs full of hurt, I think?â
It watches thon collect the cut bits of hair. âIt might work for a claim-braid, though. If you want an official one.â
Pup points at thonâs braid.
âYeah,â thon says, âlike that, but without the bead.â
By the time the bath ends, and itâs been dried with a towel, itâs tired again. It doesnât want to be tired.
âWhich one do you want to wear?â Rumbly asks. It picks the clothes that smell like Holder. Not like Holder, but the clothes they gave it.
Thon has to help it, because itâs. It feels heavy.
Pup lets its eyes close when itâs time for the loud-warm thing to dry its hair all the way. Shorter hair dries faster. Itâs really short in the back, and the front bit is down to its chin.
It sneezes in thonâs face. Thonâs eyes pinch shut, ears twitching. âLetâs get you something to help your voice before you go to bed, okay?â
That exists?
Itâs goop. The gold-orange goop that was in the warm drink, the one that tastes happy, so itâs good.
The goop (the honey) tastes happy. More than the drink did.
âNow, letâs get you to bed.â
âStay?â Its voice isnât good, but it is a little better. Or maybe being quiet makes it hurt less.
âOf course Iâll stay,â thon says, sitting down on the bed.
It curls up in thons lap. Nudges at thons hand when thon starts running fingers through its hair. Rumbly is Good. A lot more Good than Pain ever was Bad.
Thons hands are gentle, and thon even pauses to ask if its okay when thon notices it shaking.
It grabs thons hand. Digs claws into thons hand. Presses the hand back on its head, and doesnât let go until Rumbly runs fingers through its hair again.
Pup sticks the sound-words in its memory. Scratches them into one of the walls. It canât echo it, it canât use its voice, so itâll just remember it.
Itâll remember it, and whenever it needs to, itâll say it again and again and again. It.
Thonâs voice is gentle. âDo you want a story?â
Thonâs voice is gentle, weaving through stories, telling them with a songlike word pattern. It manages to get four-and-a-half stories before falling asleep.
Manages to get four-and-a-half stories beforeâŚ.

So, going off your response to the Jaguar escape, why /do/ modern zoo ethics prohibit allowing captive predators to engage in full behavioral sequences like stalking and killing?
Itâs because the welfare of the prey animal matters as much as the welfare of the predator. Itâs not considered acceptable in pretty much any animal sector to put prey animals through the stress of being hunted, and especially not when they have no potential to escape. (The only exception I have heard of for this is in programs that are training animals from conservation programs to hunt right before theyâre released into the wild).
Plus, people would get really mad - thereâs already a lot of people who are horrified by carcass feeding just because itâs not a Disney-fied image for their kids, although thatâs lessening due to educational campaigns about why itâs utilized as a feeding technique.Â
Thereâs also this thing where, as an animal trainer, a really good rule of thumb is to never let an animal practice a behavior you donât want it to do frequently or be good at. Letting big predators practice and hone hunting skills while in human care would make an already dangerous animal care job even more risky.Â
Thereâs something worth talking about, though: the fact that, while we care mightily about the welfare of mammals, birds, and reptiles with regards to live feeding, fish seem to be fair game. Which is kind of interesting, since theyâre also vertebrates and therefore do potentially experience not only pain but stress and maybe fear. Lots of zoos that will only feed pre-killed rodents and chicks have no problem with putting live fish in pools for big cats and bears, and Iâve always wanted to see more of a discussion about why thatâs where the professionals have decided to draw the line.Â
I am a horrible terrible pet store enabling idiot who very much overpaid for this pastel even though it's got amazing flames. But I'm also a very tech and seeing this snake slowly starve to death was too much for me. Petsmart only ever offers f/t. It only ate once with an assist feed during the two months they had it. So I bought it because I'm a goddamned idiot and set it up per @wheremyscalesslither 's care sheets with damp substrate because it's also dehydrated to hell (the photo does not show how incredibly emaciated and wrinkled it is... I thought it was dead when I saw it today). It also took a live fuzzy/hopper sized m.ouse right away. I'll now be leaving it alone for a week. I'm worried about this critter but I'm hopeful. And I seriously hate pet stores that will let animals that are notoriously picky eaters when faced with substandard husbandry starve to death rather than fix husbandry or offer them food that they are more likely to take.

why it is in fact wrong and fucked up to feed live rats to snakes/any lizard ever:
Snakes have reptile brains, obviously. reptile brains are not capable of emotions like affection or anger and run almost purely on instinct. Only reacting when something happens. So basically the lowest possible form of a functioning brain. they are only capable of experiencing aggression, fear and pleasure as emotions most signs of affection towards humans are signs that they have associated you/humans with food and will act that way expecting to get it. A snake can be tricked/trained into eating a frozen prey if it is just warmed up and moved around with forceps, or cut open to allow the smell to reach them.
Rats have a partially evolved Neocortex which means they are capable of comprehending different situations, learning, affection, sadness, loneliness, and anger. They are also capable of empathy towards other rats when they are distressed or in pain, and they can regret their choices as well. Which means given any situation, a rat will have a much better understanding of its surroundings and dangers. Their reaction depends on the particular rat and how they read whatâs going on. Some will see the snake and freeze because they realize their life is in fact, in mortal danger, others will viciously attack the snake to prevent that death.Â
So we have this barred owl in rehab who is ready for live prey (to make sure he can hunt before we release him) and we considered supplementing the first night with a couple dead mice, and the following text exchange just took place:
Me: ok, supplement with something dead?
Colleague: nope, letâs just do cold turkey, mice or small rats
And my goddamn idiot brain parsed that as âthree options: cold turkey, mice, or ratsâ
And I canât stop fucking laughing about the mental image of tossing cold sandwich meat at a barred owl
