Welcome to my humble abode! Oh, how I adore the feeling of golden sunlight caressing my face through the windows; a warm and loving embrace to wake up to every morning. In my case, and it may seem a rare case, I love spending quality time indoors. There are limitless possibilities! Preparing succulent meals, watering my lovely Dujuan flowers, moving my body to the teachings of that handsome trainer on TV (you know who I’m talking about don’t you?). This is my home, my safe haven; “An inch of land, an inch of gold” (寸土寸金) as some would say; Also known as the sweet French concession. It’s quite an endearing atmosphere. My neighbors and I spend countless hours gossiping while sipping coffee and tea. It’s the perfect way to spend an afternoon. Here’s a fun fact, did you know one of the most famous poets and prose writers in modern China, Xu Zhimo, used to live here? Fascinating to think of all the old and new neighbors who will inhabit this neighborhood, the stories they will live, and the tales they will share. In the famous words of Henry David Thoreau, “How vain it is to sit down to write when you have not stood up to live.” Suddenly you realize you are in the right place, Lane 24, teeming with ordinary life and yet always a new story to be told.

There’s a violent lot of solid beauty in the little pools of putrid pinks and purples and reds. It’s like sitting in a heavy wake of total failure. Worst-case scenarios and late-night worries fully confirmed. Seeing the worst of something is a full sort of liberation. Accepting it as that- an even fuller one maybe. Relishing in the disgusting, grime-filled, murky occasional shit-swaths of living…that’s the ultimate cool. And maybe cool is really just hitting an age where you become best friends with your demons and monsters. When you invite them to come down off your back and walk with you hand-in-hand off into becoming something new. When you can swim in your own filth and whistle in the waste, you’re good-to-go. Maybe if we could all just find the right filth that coats us prettily everything would be a little easier. And we could enjoy the swim instead of wonder if we're drowning.

Whether it was planned or chaotic, chaotically planned or spontaneously perfect, monumental or low-rise, multi-lane or just wide narrow just enough for a bicycle; if it’s not the abandoned future, but the futuristic not-so-still- life present, these buildings hide something we need to see. It must have started a hundred years back when the first brick was placed to form the shape, be it French or British, followed by each one arriving from the Bund through the Avenue Edouard VII, turning to the Rue des Press, being pulled on flatbed carts crossing the Blvd Montigny. La Brique Ordinaire… somewhere under the footsteps of the Shanghailanders. It was suspicious from the beginning. “What are they building?” We could have asked but were busy looking at the mesmerizing colors and listening to the rhythm of throwing them on top of each other. When it ended, it had already been built. Now, the rest is history and it’s fair to say that setting up four walls and a roof is a legit idea if one wants to escape to a place within. But hiding to be seen is something only they could think of.

The artist’s hand is unlike any other. It moves with ease while also holding purpose and intent. The hand that holds the brush prepares for an elegant dance of vivid strokes. Delicate fingers reaching for the right tool, bending, snapping, stretching, fiddling. The impatient hand is fierce and relentless. An instrument of creation, operating with acute precision. Behold the hands, how they promise and entice. Conjuring an enchanting spell... Are you falling in love? In his book “De Anima” (c. 350 BC), Aristotle explains, "It follows that the soul is analogous to the hand; for as the hand is a tool of tools, so the mind is the form of forms and sense the form of sensible things." Hands are tools themselves by which we are able to utilize tools, in a similar way that the mind is a form by which we apprehend other forms. The artist’s hand brings forth life and love and lust. It conveys emotions and force and commands. Which makes the eyes envious of the artist’s hands.

It is a universal of human experience. From the womb we make silly contorted faces, force smiles, nod maniacally, roll our eyes dramatically, and stretch our pliant skin over the armature of our bones to express our complex, deeply held emotions. I am a rubber-faced clown. I have never been verbal owing to a shock in my childhood. Every emotion I have ever wanted to communicate I have interpreted through flexing my rubber face. Before I had mastered the techniques of my tragicomic art, I was sent by my family to study under that old master of non-verbal communication Marceau - except I never don white paint or tights or opera make-up to share my feelings. Instead of writing these lines I could describe my thoughts in a repertoire of mime. There is no greater pleasure than the memory of making faces with my friend Xia, whose family were likewise flummoxed by her refusal to speak. Exiled to the back seat as our parents sped across mountain ranges from snaking autobahn to autobahn to see the next specialist who might cure our ailment we terrorized innocent truck drivers for days on end. Some laughed, some cried. Some, the burliest of them, threw bouquets of kisses at our silent opera.
