Liroconite on Strashimirite Wheal Gorland, St Day, Cornwall, England, Europe
Liroconite: A complex cuprian beauty Mix together copper, aluminium, arsenic and water in the oxidised zone altered by penetrating groundwater of an ore deposit or the gossan of leached metal above and one occasional result it the lovely mineral depicted in these photos. Along with these blues a variety of bright bluish green examples of this soft mineral (2.5 on Mohs scale) also form. The more common crystal habit is as crusts like the 7.0 x 4.5 x 4.5 cm museum quality example on quartz here that was originally mined at Wheal Gorland in Cornwall, England. This ancient mining region exploited since prehistory is the type locality, where it was first discovered and described in 1825, though it is also found in France, Germany, Australia, , Slovakia, Russia, New Jersey and California. its name drives from the classical education prevalent in those days and combines the Greek words for pale and powder. It is a rarity and the best specimens come from this mine in Cornwall which was mostly depleted by the mid 1800’s. New material is non-existent, and everything on the market derives either from historical collections and the occasional find in old mine tailings. At the other localities it occurs only as traces mixed with a wide variety of other copper based goodies. Liroconite (TL) with Turquoise var. Henwoodite
Size: 3.2 x 2.7 x 2.4 cm
Due to its beautiful, rich blue color and significant rarity, PLUS the fact that the world's only supply came out in the mid-1800s and never again, the copper species Liroconite is quite understandably one of those Holy Grails of mineral collecting. Top quality Liroconites are basically unique to this ancient mine, with nothing comparable having been found anywhere else since.
