𝐀𝐔𝐓𝐔𝐌𝐍 𝐇𝐀𝐃 𝐂𝐑𝐄𝐏𝐓 𝐈𝐍. as if they were unaware of the seasons , the teenagers had scrambled for their heavier coats , longer sleeves & scarfs. it was a reminder that they were in new england , their home ; their sea soaked place that smelled of matted moss , burnt butter leftover in antique butter churns their parents collected but never knew how to use , of vegetable dyed cloth left out to dry on the clothesline ; how the archaic smells & sounds of a place unused for centuries started to waft up from the soft ground every time someone took a step ( how their standard places of modernity seemed more & more like the ruins of another time ) . was this the new age? so far flung back into a century they read about in books that it was a past now resurrected? traditions put in place , a sign of normalcy. an american staple of football on the front lawn , reminders that they were still in high school , that there was still some playground hierarchy. campbell had chided elle before she left < why would you want to go to that pathetic display? they’re not realizing what’s actually happening here. that they mean nothing in this new world. but sure , go ahead and watch some assholes toss around a ball . it’s not like anyone’s going to talk to you there anyways > . but elle had decided that she would go , not tied to his changeable moods . she half expected him to follow her or eventually change his mind for the fifth time that afternoon & show up all smiles to heckle the teams. she side stepped through the crowd , soft excuse me’s given but no one noticing amongst the cheers. as she glided through the sea of other teens wrapped up in their heavier coats , she saw the faint figure of oliver , running past luke when the quarterback tried to throw the ball to jason but oliver intercepted it so quick that no one seemed to notice jason hadn’t caught it. come on , run faster! you’re almost there. 𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝 𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐟 𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 , 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐮𝐝 , 𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐮𝐫𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐧𝐞𝐰 𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐝 ( could she call him that? would he call it that? ) , her small hands delicately bound together in fists in anticipation . a whistle was blown , calling the game over and , luke’s team had lost? the sheer disappointment on luke’s face & even that of his girlfriend’s helena , shown on their features. golden boy dethroned & even during the homecoming season? that had to hurt.
❝ oliver ---- hey! ❞ the blonde called out to him , balled fists now flat as she raised her palms to wave excitedly. Is this what watching a sporting event did to her? she remembered in school how he had urged her to come to the games , to try & talk to others there as if sitting in a room full of strangers though she had known these kids most of her life would suddenly change how they felt about her because they saw her at a game. she walked closer to him until the small crowd gathering around him dispersed to other places and it was just them. partially winded because of how exciting the game was and the fact that she had near sprinted to him , she chuckled nervously and took a deep but shuddering breath before speaking. ❝ you really kicked luke’s ass out there. It was kinda hot. ❞ she murmured , clear eyes finding his and her face felt very flushed. WHAT THE HELL DID SHE JUST SAY? what sort of cheerleading blonde demon had possessed her? oh god , she wanted to run. she wanted the ground to swallow her up , hell , she would even settle for campbell to appear & wrap his arm around her & make it seem like they were a thing just to get her out of her own embarrassment.
