Lim Guan Eng promises Line Clear will not be closed down

GEORGE TOWN, Feb 4, 2015:

Admitting he is a nasi kandar fan, Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng today gave his assurance that the iconic Penang Line Clear would not be closed down.

“I like nasi kandar. Of course we are not closing it down. It is Penang’s food heritage,” he said in a press conference today.

Lim refuted allegations by “certain media” that the Pakatan Rakyat state government was planning to close down the food outlet and is deliberately taking action against a Muslim trader in the heritage city.

He said it was unethical to turn the issue into a political and racial game as it was purely over a licensing dispute that the municipal council took action last month.

There has been an internal struggle between the four licence holders, who are cousins, to operate the famous nasi kandar along a narrow alleyway off Penang Road.

The Penang Island Municipal Council had issued annual licences to each operator — Abdul Hamid Seeni Parkir, Abdul Latiff Thulkarunai, Sahubarali China Mohd Hanibah and Pathumah Iskandar — on an annual rotation basis.

Hamid, whose licence had expired on Dec 31, 2014, was supposed to vacate the stall for Latiff to take over but did not do so which prompted the council to take action last month and forcibly evict Hamid.

Hamid has filed a suit against his cousins and also obtained a court order to stop the council from taking further action pending the suit.

Japanese tourist makes annual pilgrimage to Penang — for Line Clear Nasi Kandar

GEORGE TOWN, Jan 21, 2015:

All it took was a recommendation from a hotel employee a decade ago for a Japanese tourist to pay a visit to Line Clear Nasi Kandar, a popular eatery here.

Matsui Takaharu did just that and immediately fell in love with the food.

So much so, the 52-year-old from Nagoya, Japan, visits Penang every year, partly to satisfy his craving for the sumptuous mixed rice, admitting that the curries and dishes well suited his taste buds.

His friends back in the Land of the Rising Sun are aware of his infatuation with the dish. They often joke that he is going for his “yearly nasi kandar pilgrimage”.

Some even suggested that Takaharu open a nasi kandar stall in Japan. He did not do so, however, as he felt it would not be authentic food fare.

“I want to be the customer to enjoy the food, not the person running the shop,” he told The Rakyat Post.

Asked on the possibility of Line Clear closing down or ceasing operations, Takaharu hoped that would not happen. If it did, he would be devastated.

“It would be like my world coming to an end.

“Sometimes, I feel like moving to Penang just for Line Clear’s nasi kandar.”

Earlier today, the Penang Island Municipal Council (MPPP) gave an ultimatum to the current operator of the Line Clear Nasi Kandar outlet to abide by the eviction order or the “MPPP will know what to do”.

However, MPPP president Datuk Patahiyah Ismail said while the operator was currently running without a valid permit, there were no plans to close down the iconic stall, which had been operating since the 1930s.

Line Clear Nasi Kandar owner Abdul Hamid Seeni Pakir said Takaharu, a loyal customer and friend, would call to inform him whenever he was in town.

Line Clear: MPPP bagi kata dua

GEORGE TOWN, 21 Januari:

Majlis Perbandaran Pulau Pinang (MPPP) hari ini memberi kata dua kepada pihak Nasi Kandar Line Clear untuk menghentikan operasi berikutan pemilik premis itu gagal mendapatkan permit untuk tahun 2015.

Presiden MPPP, Datuk Patahiyah Ismail berkata, pihaknya bagaimanapun tiada perancangan untuk menutup operasi premis berkenaan yang merupakan salah satu ikon makanan di Pulau Pinang dan beroperasi sejak 1930an.

Patahiyah berkata, pihaknya bagaimanapun tiada pilihan untuk mengambil tindakan ke atas pemilik premis berkenaan, Abdul Hamid Seeni Pakir yang berkeras untuk meneruskan perniagaan tanpa permit di Jalan Penang.

“Bagaimanapun, masalah ini akan diselesaikan dengan berhemah. Kita akan adakan pertemuan dengan semua pihak sebelum mengambil tindakan yang sewajarnya.

“Pihak MPPP menerima pelbagai persepsi negatif masyarakat, namun kita hanya menjalankan tugas bagi menyelesaikan masalah ini,” katanya pada sidang media yang diadakan di Komtar, hari ini.

Ditanya berkenaan tindakan pemilik premis itu yang masih menjalankan perniagaan seperti biasa, beliau berkata, mustahil untuk MPPP, menutup terus perniagaan itu dan apa yang boleh pihaknya lakukan ialah dengan menjalankan serbuan dan menyita barangan di premis terbabit sehingga mereka mendapat permit.

Kelmarin, MPPP menjalankan serbuan dan merampas barangan di premis Nasi Kandar Line Clear kerana beroperasi tanpa permit yang sah.

Line Clear assures customers it will not close shop

GEORGE TOWN, June 3:

The operator of Nasi Kandar Line Clear here has reassured its customers that it would not cease operations and it would be business as usual.

Its current operator,  Abdul Hamid Seeni Pakir, 76, said he received calls from friends and regular customers asking whether the shop, located in a narrow alley in Jalan Penang  would cease operations.

“Many called me up as early as 5am after news broke out that we would be closing down due to licensing problems but I reassured them that they would still get to enjoy their favourite dishes here,” said Abdul Hamid when met at the shop earlier today.

One of their regular customers, Ismett Azyze, 69 who happens to be the son of Penang’s first chairman of the Penang Rural District Council, A. Azyze (who has a road in Tanjung Bungah named after him) was seen enjoying his meal at the almost century-old shop and said Penang would not be the same without Nasi Kandar Line Clear.

Ismett, a retired civil servant who used to live in Bayan Lepas during his formative years later moved to Subang Jaya but would come back to Penang every now and then just to enjoy his favourite meal of Line Clear nasi kandar with his family.

“I don’t care what the issue is — all I know is that this shop should not be closed as it is already synonymous with Penang.

“Closing it down would be akin to closing down a side of Penang; I really hope the news is untrue as I’ve been coming here with my father since I was a kid and I knew the founders in person,” he said.

Another customer, Felicia Khor, 40, from the United States said it was her first time trying out Nasi Kandar Line Clear and said it was as tasty as what she had expected it to be after having read so much about it online.

“I’ve not heard anything about this place going to be closed down but if it’s true then it is very sad as it is listed as one of the must-visit and ‘must try’ places in Penang,” she said.

Another customer from Puchong, M. Fadil Razak, 46, an executive said he hoped the news was untrue as the “line would not be clear anymore” if Line Clear is closed down.

“My visits to Penang every time will not be complete without tucking into my favourite nasi kandar here,” he said.

Meanwhile, Abdul Hamid’s son, Hashim Abdul Hamid is intent on bringing the matter to the Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission (MACC) as he claimed that there could have been misuse of power in the Penang Island Municipal Council (MPPP) licensing department.

The already famous Line Clear nasi kandar became even more famous yesterday when it made headlines after MPPP held a press conference to step in to end the dispute regarding its ownership and licensing issues.

The issue ensued following a heated family feud over the ownership and operations of the 24-hour eatery which has been in operations since the late 1930s.

MPPP licensing department director Azman Sirun told a press conference yesterday that a license to operate the food outlet was issued to three individuals in 2012 while Hashim is questioning why licences were issued to the three, his uncles and aunt Abdul Latiff Thulkarunai, Sahubarali China Mohd Hanibah and Pathumah Iskandar and not his father who is the direct descendent or son of one of the founders.

“Why the double standards?

“We will produce evidence by tomorrow to show who the rightful owner is,” he said.

The issue cropped up when the three wanted to take over the business as the agreement said that the business was to be run on a rotation system between owners on a yearly basis.
