are there video games where the main character has wings. surely. there has to be right
the violence layer is so deeply disturbing to me in a way that's ironically not actually entirely about the violence. the guttermen and general extreme human cruelty are the stuff of nightmares for sure, but i also keep getting hung up on the earthmover fight, and specifically how it feels to see so precisely what v1 was built for
despite how beautiful and exciting that level was, it almost feels like a letdown to know our specific purpose. it's easy to picture a life for v1 where it did nothing but that, over and over and over---and a life where there were hundreds of them on the battlefield, each one given the exact same instincts and desires that guide the one we follow. our special little protagonist suddenly isn't special at all, and in fact is just another step in the cycle that led to the world's end. v1's elegant design and zeal for its violent life are rendered mundane; its purpose is made so meaningless it almost feels worthless to pursue. almost.
one reason v1 refuses to stop is because it's purpose is hardwired into its very body. despite any potential mixed feelings violence might stir up about its purpose, it still knows at its core that it wants to live, just as you, playing the game, want to continue and see where it goes.
of course, i'm not sure if v1 shares any of these thoughts with me. i have to wonder if it knew everything the whole time? sure, it never saw warfare, but i wonder if it has knowledge about its creation we don't or instincts we can't feel. much of my characterization of v1 is based on my own projection, so i'm willing to admit it probably wasn't thinking about all that in the moment.
still, i think the idea of a v1 who did think about it, somewhere in the back of their mind, but pushed it away, makes (what i've seen of) fraud that much more interesting. violence is here to force you to confront the meaninglessness and inevitability of your mission, if not the cruelty, and fraud is here to make sure you can't ignore it, mocking you with theater and puppet imagery and mirrors, casting v1 as an obedient dog. together the two feel like psychological warfare, but they only really land for me if as a duo, exploring hell's opinions on humanity and v1's relationship with agency simultaneously.
we have a pianist at work that plays for the lobby and shes currently playing god bless the broken road by rascal flats which first of all BANGER. second of all how am i not supposed to think about sandray on the clock when these are the conditions im being put in.
