“Starside” by Alex Aster
i finished this book yesterday, and let me just say: if you’ve read “Red Queen”, you know that that story holds one of the most painful plot twists known to man—if not the one. it’s been some years since i read the series, but to this day that statement holds true. so far, “Starside” is the only book (aside from “Heartless” by Marissa Meyer) that’s come close to having such a painful plot twist. like rip-your-heart-out-stomp-it-to-bits-set-it-ablaze painful. very good story, i was intrigued the whole way through. i am excited for the next book, but i’m not anxiously awaiting it, if that makes sense. i’d give it a good 3.5/5 (i’m a harsh critic i’m sorry). i still need to read “Lightlark”, though.
Moots + About me page!
I've been rewatching your lightlark reviews and have slowly come to the vaguely upsetting realisation that I'm pretty sure these rulers are constantly wearing their crowns?
I know Alex Aster has a crown obsession, but I guess my common sense kinda just filled in that crowns in lightlark work how crowns in the real world work, as in, worn for important events, and not every waking moment of a person's life.
Is there anything in the books that confirms or denies this? Because I do not want to believe that these rulers were traipsing around lightlark, fighting people and creatures to the point of constantly having to tend to each others wounds, during a supposedly 'deadly game', while wearing stupid, elaborate, impractical crowns on their heads.
yeah generally speaking, you are correct to assume they are constantly wearing their crowns at any given moment. there's a lot of textual evidence to support this. There are plenty of times crowns are NOT being worn!! but yeah. most of the time they are.
what strikes me about the crowns in the series is how incredibly good they are at staying on. Crowns are broadly speaking not the best at staying on your head unless you are sitting or calmly walking....
also what is up with the sexual dimorphism obsession romantasy has how vastly different a head size could oro and isla have
Oro...💔💔💔

I believe that everyone has the right to enjoy what they want to, as long as it doesn't hurt anybody and makes them happy. That being said, there are some books out there that if you tell me you like them I'm assuming you’re either 14 or you're lying.
I've been slowly reading the Lightlark series by Alex Aster. I made it through Skyshade a couple of days ago and just start Grim and Oro.
I'll be honest. I was planning on DNF'ing the series after Skyshade. I really didn't like it anymore. I don't like Isla nor do I like Grim and so much of Nightshade and Skyshade surrounded them that I was no longer interested. I literally only finished Skyshade for Lynx and Wraith. Then I found out about Grim and Oro.
I'm about halfway through Oro's side right now. I genuinely believe the 147 pages I've read so far are better than the entirety of the first three books. Oro is such a compelling character and I love the background given to Oro, his friends, and Grim. It actually makes me a little excited to read Grim's side. I'm still not excited to continue on in the series proper, so I'll have to decide after finishing Grim's side if it's worth continuing on to Crowntide.
Does anyone who has read it have any thoughts (non-spoilery) to share? Is it worth continuing? Does it get better in the fourth book?
