Machine Vision (MV) technology is not a new invention and was at least applied to the manufacturing industry since 1980s [1], With the aid of method like Inline coherent imaging [2], Visible light imaging, sonic, magnificent detection, real-world objects can be captured and transfer into digital numerical data for computer analysis [3]. And during the popularize of technology, together Complementing with the development of BIM and quality control of the construction industry, more try on applying MV on the construction process was made, for example applying Laser-Based Vision System for Weld Quality Inspection [4]. But from the industry experience, these methods were not frequently used according to its cost in special techniques, development resources or selling price of package service. Alert that the rise of care on re-construction, renewal, maintenance and quality control, the application of MV technology should be developed to provide handy, fast and accurate performance especially for those may use in in-situ situation. Thus, two media-based equipment/software, ‘Display land’ from Ubiquity6 Inc. and “Structure Sensor 3D Scanner” from Occipital, Inc. , was tested in this article for understanding the ability of applying relatively handy MV technology for construction industry.

“If you’re going to build something, build it right.”

Name: Stephen Milton Location: King City, Ontario Occupation: Master Gunsmith

Stephen Milton is pretty sure his parents thought he was a proper nuisance as a child. He always took anything mechanical apart to figure out how it worked.  Before he put it back together he would always make at least one adjustment to improve it. Besides fiddling with mechanical things, Stephen drew, painted and had a passion for shooting.  Growing up in the U.K. countryside, he often hunted birds and rabbits.  He was also fascinated with the inner workings of fine shotguns and rifles. 

His appreciation for art led Stephen to admire the beauty of fine shotguns and rifles.  As a mechanical engineering apprentice, he amazed many of his mentors with how quickly he could solve problems.  But Stephen missed working with guns, so he took a five-year apprenticeship with a gunsmith and eventually decided to branch out on his own as a freelancer. 

He made parts and repaired shotguns and double-barrel rifles for established companies before he emigrated to Canada to start his own business, Precision Arms & Gunsmithing Ltd.  His quality craftsmanship quickly earned him customers. There’s fine detail in every piece that Stephen uses to build the guns – there’s no “close enough” – everything must be precise down to the moisture content in the wood.

It doesn’t stop there. Stephen doesn’t just care about the mechanics of the gun, it has to be built beautifully. Form and function are married together in Stephen’s guns. He loves seeing the finished product and the appreciation of it in the faces of his customers. 

"I love how social media instantly connects people from across the globe. Because of my background in political science, the idea of spreading news globally is something that really intrigues me. Facebook and Twitter are powerful tools which facilitate everything from cultural exchanges to the spread of breaking news. I love how it allows small businesses to promote themselves at an affordable cost because now they have the power to get their message out to as many people as large businesses do and this essentially levels the playing field. This is a truly great thing." 

Name: Lauren Dugan

Occupation: Social Media Consultant

Location: Waterloo

Her Journey:

Lauren Dugan, self proclaimed twitter addict, is a brilliant writer, an avid reader, a big-time gamer and just about any computer nerd's dream gal. Lauren is not only beautiful, young and intelligent, but she is also a brilliant entrepreneur who is dominating the world of social media, one tweet at a time.

Lauren's journey towards this career is an interesting one merely because social media did not exist when she was a child. Her path, however, was laid out quite clearly because of her other life-long passion: "From the womb, I was a huge reader! I would devour books like GooseBumps all the way to The Lord of The Rings and Narnia. I was obsessed from as early as I can even remember", she says. Naturally, her love of reading led to her love of writing and by elementary school, Lauren was writing short stories and excelling in all aspects of English class.

By grade 9 high school, Lauren became increasingly curious about computers. She enrolled in, what was at the time, the highly unpopular computer science elective and immediately found herself intrigued by it. "That computer science class was what got me understanding the tech side of things. From there, I found a way to merge my writing skills with my computer skills by blogging. As I was going through high school, I blogged about everything from poetry to food", she says.

After high school, Lauren immediately got accepted into Wilfred Laurier University and started her BA in English and Politics, immersing herself in the reading and writing elements of her program. In her 3rd year, her then boyfriend and current fiancee Neil Vidyarthi, accepted a job in Los Angeles and Lauren went along for the ride. While in L.A. and completing distance education courses online, Lauren started to seek ways to work legally in the States.

"I applied to hundreds of online writing jobs and eventually started blogging for pay. I landed so many odd jobs! I was doing things like writing TV remote control reviews to blogging about interior design. I eventually started blogging daily for a celebrity Beverly Hills plastic surgeon. Like interior design, this was a topic which I knew nothing about, yet, I wrote about breast implants, nose jobs and other crazy surgeries for an entire year!" 

While writing these blogs and finishing her education online, Lauren found herself addicted to the brand new Facebook game called Pet Society.

"Neil could see that this game was eventually going to be huge, so he encouraged me to start a blog about it. I wrote a few posts and then approached other players to write for me. What started as a small blog turned into 100 000 visits per month. We eventually became one of Pet Society's official fan blogs and a feature on their website. I didn't make a ton of money from this but because the traffic was crazy, I put two and two together and realized that there is something to this whole blogging craze. The wheels in my head started to turn".

In 2009, Lauren and Neil moved back to Waterloo and while keeping up with her blogging on the side, Lauren completed her university degree. A few months prior to her graduation, Neil connected Lauren to an old colleague who was looking for social network writers. Because of Lauren's experience with Pet Society, she immediately landed the job, dropped her smaller clients and began working semi exclusively with the New York based company MediaBistro.

In november of 2010, MediaBistro decided to launch a new blog site called Alltwitter.com. This time, instead of a contributor, Lauren got hired as the editor and helped to launch the site.

"I really focused on using social media to promote this blog. We have about 15 000 followers on twitter and approximately 6 000 Facebook likes! Social media people love to talk about social media on social media. It's such a cyclical industry. Part of what I did was use that to the benefit of the blog but I also made it an approachable source of information for people who are not social media pros. We now get 300 000 monthly visits!"

Recently, Lauren decided to take a step back from her position as editor and go back to being a contributor in order to give herself more time to work on her independent social media consulting company.

"I am looking to help local small business learn social media for themselves because if you own a small business, the best person to do your social media is you. I basically want to focus on training and teaching people how to use this incredible tool for themselves and really make it work for them."

"I have always enjoyed books and reading, but I also love libraries because anyone can go in and have access to an incredible wealth of resources which are all free. It is my job, as a librarian, to help people access these resources. Being a librarian is more than just a love of books, you have to genuinely enjoy helping people."  

Name: Christy Giesler

Occupation: Librarian 

Location: Kitchener Ontario 

Her Journey:

There is a famous quotation which states that, “Good fiction should be beautiful, and powerful, but it should also work. It should have something in it that enlightens, something in it that opens a door and points the way.” Christy Giesler, the teen services librarian at the Kitchener Public Library, did not only choose to be a librarian because she has a passion for literature and reading. Christy chose this path because she has an interest in helping people discover the joy that one feels when they truly connect with a novel. 

Christy grew up in a family of readers and heavy library users. "Books were always a big part of my childhood. I have really fond memories of being read to as a little girl", she says. With this love of literature, Christy found comfort within libraries: "I was always attracted to the library space. I love the feeling that you get when you enter a library. All of those books bring all of those possibilities. When I am here, I feel at home".  

Christy completed an undergraduate degree at York University with the initial goal of becoming a school teacher. After graduation, she sought out volunteering hours at a local library. Christy was almost immediately hired on staff and instantly fell in love with, what would turn out to be, her full-time career. Christy comments that, "I didn't know you could have a career as a librarian. In hindsight, I should have realized that it would be a perfect fit." After a year working in the library, Christy went back to school and completed a Master in Library and Information Sciences at the University of Western Ontario. After graduation, Christy got employed at the Kitchener Public Library as the teen services librarian.

Christy is now responsible for the teen collections, programming for teens and outreach. "I want to make libraries as welcoming for teens as they were for me. I want them to know that we are here for them and that we have books just for them. I am so lucky to have such a great job." she says. Her passion and willingness to help did not go unnoticed by our community. In 2009, she was amongst 40 young leaders in the Waterloo Region to be recognized for making a difference in the community ("Top 40 under 40"). In 2010, Christy was also granted  the Ontario Public Library Association Excellence in Youth Services Award. When asked what she loves the most about her job, she says:

"I get to talk to teens about all the books that are out there just for them! One of my favourite parts of the job is meeting with a teen who doesn't consider themselves to be a reader, talking to them about their interests, and  referring them to a book that they may like. The best compliment I receive is when I hear back from a  teen telling me that I made them want to read or that they loved the book I recommended."

Name: Dragana Nedeljkovic

Occupation: Pharmacist/Owner of Shopper’s Drug Mart

Location: Waterloo, Ontario

Her Journey:

Dragana Nedeljkovic’s journey towards success was not an easy trek. Although her demeanor is incredibly calm, confident and compassionate, she travelled a long way and underwent many hardships to get to where she is today. Born in Zrenjanin Serbia, Dragana’s love for science, in particular chemistry, and her compassion for people, sparked an interest which led her towards a career in pharmacy: “I just truly love to help people. I wanted to combine my interest in sciences with my love for people and being a pharmacist just seemed to fit.” Dragana moved to Belgrade to complete her undergraduate degree and immediately started working in Serbia as a full-time pharmacist.

Shortly after graduating from University, the war in former Yugoslavia began. When asked what made her decide to move to Canada, she answers; “I could not see myself living in a country with such bad political and economical conditions. Canada opened up their borders and I was lucky enough to get in”.

In Canada, Dragana was considered an international graduate and no longer a pharmacist. In order to attain the license which would allow her to work, she had to pass a series of examinations. While studying for these exams and consecutively learning English, she volunteered at Shopper’s Drug Mart and after 3 years of hard work and dedication, was able to attain her license.

Although the job market was not thriving, Dragana found an opening in Kitchener as an overnight pharmacist. For an entire year she worked a grueling shift from midnight to 8am: “I never saw sunshine. I worked all night and slept all day. It was a great opportunity but it destroyed so much of my life.” With the desire for change, she quit and started her own business as a self-employed pharmacist floating from store to store covering holidays, sick days, etc. She recalls that; “I really enjoyed the experience but I was incredibly busy and so tired. I was in Kitchener, Waterloo, Woodstock, Elmira, Fergus, you name it! Some days I would wake up in the morning and not even know where to go.” Finally, Dragana was able to attain a full day-time position at a Shopper’s Drug Mart in Kitchener. Seeing her great potential and likeability with the patients, the District Manager immediately approached her with an offer to be a store owner and she accepted.

Today, Dragana is a Shopper’s Drug Mart owner and full-time pharmacist at the Erb and Ira Needles location. When asked what it is that makes her excited to go into work every day, she replies: “I have so many amazing people working here and they are what make this place amazing!” Her enthusiasm, undeniable kindness and sincerity is not only a delight and a pleasure to be around but a true joy to see.

Toronto Maple Leafs

Their Philosophy: The Maple Leafs strive for teamwork, dedication, courage, perserverance and to fight for the win. Their philosophy is to play hard, play fair, to not give up on each other and to never give up on the game.

Our Concept: With such inspiring players as our models, we aimed to capture the true grit and reality of the game and of the players themselves. The arenas photographed are all community rinks located in South Western Ontario and in the GTA. It is easy to forget that each and every NHL player started as a child with a dream on their local rink. We wanted to reflect this idea throughout the shots.

Our Result: What we ended up with were beautiful, real and raw photographs. We were able to capture the intensity of the players but also the beauty in the love that they have for the game. The photographs of the arenas showed their incredible architecture but also reflected the emotions within them now and throughout Canadian hockey history.

What: Commercial Advertisement Shoot

The Shoot: Patience, patience and patience is what is needed when working with animals of any kind. You have to be attentive, quick to respond to moments that last a very short time and patient in getting the animal to work with you rather than against you.
