4 Months -- reaches out to people -- drools

5 Months -- sleeps through the night -- recognizes family members from strangers

6 Months -- teething begins -- sits upright -- speaks one-syllable words

7 Months -- afraid of strangers -- mood swings

8 Months -- responds to "no" -- can sit alone -- plays peek-a-boo

9 Months -- pulls up to stand -- places objects in mouth to explore them

10 Months -- responds to name -- crawls efficiently

11 Months -- starts to walk without help -- frustrated with restrictions

12 Months -- knows name -- walks

We were discussing double standards between aging men and women* and how aging women are viewed to be less attractive and have worse personalities while aging men are seen as “distinguished.”

Everyone in my class was talking about how beauty shouldn’t be only equated with youth and older women are beautiful too and like yes that is true and well-intentioned. They were just so close to getting the point.

And the point is that women shouldn’t have to be beautiful at all. Women add value to society whether or not they are conventionally (or unconventially) attractive and the fact that nobody in my class of 95% women pointed that out just shows how this has been ingrained in us since the beginning.

This problem exits because (at least in the US) women can only exist and have value if men decide if they are attractive or worthy.

I just had my hand raised to say all this when class ended. Opportunity missed.

*(I’m using the gender binary because issues like this primarily result from adherence to a strict binary, but most people in the US have been socialized this way and I recognize that trans, intersex, agender, genderfluid, and non-binary folks have varied experiences and may relate to this differently)
