How To Make Hot Dog Stew
Hot Dog Stew is a relatively simple dish that can be cooked in a crock pot/slow cooker. Which makes it perfect for autistic individuals because the steps aren't too hard. It can also be changed however you’d like and is one of those dishes that’s what every around the house you can use.
Ingredients For My Hot Dog Stew:
1 package of hot dogs. (Any kind)
3 potatoes if you have a smaller crock pot I suggest 2.
2 carrots.
1 onion.
1 can of peas.
1 package of chorizo.
1 small can of spaghetti sauce. (Any kind, I used Heinz for mine.)
1 big can of tomato sauce. (Any kind, also used Heinz.)
2 to 3 cups of water.
The first step is to open the tomato sauce and pour it into the crockpot while it is not on. Then pour the spaghetti sauce in the pot and stir it into the tomato sauce.
After the sauces are in pour in the 2 to 3 cups of water (I went with 3) and stir.
Wash your veggies.
Peal all the skins off the carrots, potatoes, and onion.
Wash your veggies again.
Cut the vegetables up into the sizes you think are best to make it easiest to eat for you. I cut my vegetables up into bigger, chunkier slices, in case there are some vegetables I’m having sensory troubles with and I can take them out if I want or eat around them.
Turn the crock pot on a low setting mine’s just says low on it so that’s what I turn it to. If you have a numbered crockpot do what you think is low.
Place all the veggies into the crockpot.
Stir the veggies.
Open the can of peas and empty the peas into a strainer over the sink. Shake out strainer full of peas a little until they are dry to your liking. Then pour the peas into the crockpot.
Stir the peas into the hot dog stew.
Open up the chorizo and hot dogs. Chorizo is usually big and comes in packs of 2 that’s all you need but if you want more buy more. For the hot dogs you will want 6 of them. Please note if you are heavy sensory that chorizo may not be something you want to put into the crockpot because it can register a bit spicy for sensitive taste buds. I’m very sensory when it comes to my tongue but as long as I have enough drink I’m fine with chorizo.
Cut the hot dogs and chorizo into pieces proportionate to your liking. (Thinly sliced or thick)
Put the hot dogs and chorizo into the crockpot.
Stir the hot dogs and chorizo into the hot dog stew.
(If you decide on waiting to make your hot dog stew but buy your ingredients ahead of time make sure to thaw out the hot dogs and chorizo. That usually takes up to 10 to 15 minutes. Take them out of their packages and re-heat them for 3 minutes.)
Put the lid on the crockpot.
You will know that your meal is done when the potatoes are soft. Keep checking up on the pot and stir the hot dog stew around. The stirring is an important part because it helps the stew cook. This will usually take up to an hour but if your potatoes aren’t done let the stew stay in a little longer. Check up and stir your stew every 5 to 15 minutes. Set up alarms if you have to.
After the potatoes are done your stew is done and you can enjoy the hot dog stew.
If you want the flavor the flavor to pop add some pepper in or some hot sauce. You can add things like buffalo sauce in but you have to add it into tomato and spaghetti sauce before you put everything else and start cooking.
My stew is not done yet but from what I’ve tasted so far it is excellent and has been a very rewarding task for me to complete so far. Cooking is that life skill that I’ve talked about before that I really struggle with but this makes me want to cook more.
