So President Fuckup is about to drive grocery prices even higher. Some tips for cooking on a tight budget I've learned over the last decade or so:
Store loyalty programs, so long as they are free, are your friend. I save a decent amount of money with the Safeway one, and used to with Giant til the one closest to me closed down and I had to switch fully to the Safeway.
Check the store's weekly and monthly ads. Some will have both. You can meal plan based on sales if needed, and also know when it's safe to stock up on basics you use a lot.
Still Tasty is a GREAT site for learning how long various foods and ingredients will keep and under what conditions. You can also use this when purchase planning.
Frozen veg can be just as good as fresh but cheaper. I get all my peas and broccoli frozen and have for years. I cannot speak as to frozen fruit (I don't buy it) but I've heard it's of similar quality in many cases.
Frozen proteins can also be good, but keep an eye on recalls, especially for chicken.
Your own freezer is your friend. Really good meat sale? Freeze it. Batch cooking more than you can eat before it turns bad? Freeze it. Want to know HOW to or IF to freeze it? The internet is happy to tell you! (note: there are some disagreements, use your best judgement and multiple sources, do not trust AI on this)
Learn to batch cook. I have two days off a week on a regular schedule, Thursday and Sundays. I make sure I am cooking something both those days I can use as dinner when I get home the other five days because I WILL be too tired to make anything more than "heat it up."
Just about every recipe site has a "print" option you can use to save the recipe as a PDF with no ads or excess. This makes it very easy to access even if you have no internet or the ads/page flair drives you nuts.
Figure out the handful of things you genuinely need to buy the more expensive option. Do you want to avoid the Dirty Dozen of non organic produce? Is there a specific brand that makes a product better than you or any other version can? Is there a texture or taste issue with all other versions but this one? These are the thing you shop around for and watch for sales like an absolute hawk. I keep an eye on FOUR nearby stores over organic apples for homemade applesauce because it's one of my "gotta have it" things. If my fav ice cream goes on the super sale (very close to 2-for-1) I'm buying four. It keeps, after all. Same for Cheerios. Freaking no one seems to get generic Cheerios right.
By the same notion, where can you go generic? I personally find a lot of store brand baking ingredients are fine, tho I prefer Arm and Hammer for baking soda if I can (can't always since I also use it for cleaning). Is the store brand cheese ok? How about their breads? I like Italian White Bread, and Safeway makes a generic that's two bucks a loaf cheaper than my old usual.
Learn food storage tips. Nuts keep much longer in the fridge or freezer. Apples keep for MONTHS in the fridge if needed. Wrap the top of bananas for them to stay fresh longer if you're adverse to keeping them cold.
Learn grocery store pricing. Most price by the ounce (USA weight system) where I am so that can inform you as well if something really is a deal. For a while there was a deal at one store to get two 32oz jars of one PB cheaper than even the store brand 64oz. That's just a no-brainer.
Accept you can't buy everything in bulk. Space is not infinite. I live in a just under 700sq foot home. I have a normal-to-smaller size freezer-on-top fridge and my food storage is mostly one 4-foot three-shelf cabinet plus some "long term" storage by my pans underneath. I can only keep so much in those places, especially the fridge and freezer.
Share memberships with friends. Oh, Costo/Sam's Club/whatever checks ID? Go with them! Shop together and then have them venmo/cashapp/paypal/whatever else you their share! I did this with a coworker in grad school--she got use of my larger car trunk for buying large/bulk things, I got to use Sam's Club! Win-win!
