the day is a pleasant one, at least where the weather is concerned: clear skies a crisp, autumnal blue, the kind that smells like frost, and a mild breeze that twirls and caresses away fatigue. high-hanging threads of cloud cover relieve some of the sun’s brightness, and there’s just enough moisture in the air to soothe skin beginning to dry with the newfound chill.
since the beginning of the month, the crowds have only gotten bigger. what had been a steady stream of visitors at the start has since swollen to crowds as the harvest has gotten fully underway, and he’s spent days watching the monastery’s monks dash around, looking as though they never have a moment’s rest. apparently the knights have their hands full as well, attentions divided between the situation with the western church and monitoring the flood of people in and out of the cathedral, maintaining peace and order.
it’s no surprise when hands fall short, and eventually students are called to fill in the gaps.
though he’ll admit, he wasn’t expecting this when they’d told him he wouldn’t be patrolling alone.
❝ they’re so short on manpower, even the faculty are getting pulled in, i suppose, ❞ he remarks. at least it’s an improvement from the last time he’d been tasked with guard duty — almost anyone else would be preferable to that loud girl’s incessant chatter. but he’d hardly imagined it would be one of the reason professors. unlike hanneman, this one is young, almost questionably so. he’d proven himself skilled enough in magic during lectures, however, and felix has no qualms about learning from his betters, regardless of the circumstance. it feels strange, on patrol with one of the staff instead of a peer.
anyway, he can only hope it will go quickly. the time spent walking circles around the grounds of garreg mach could have been better used somewhere else.
