If she were to be truthful, Azeroth had long since become foreign to her. The world she had known as kaldorei had been irrevocably changed by her queen's own hand, the shape of the land as altered as that of Azshara's sacrificed subjects. She had not left the ocean floor and the greatness of Nazjatar until sent to spy on him; and then came the switching sides that led her to Outland, death that led her beyond.
When Vashj considers their homeworld, she finds there is little attachment left for it. She cares not for the place; she cares not for the races that came to inhabit it. Even those who held her allegiance in the past, deep beneath the seas, elicit no sympathy from her heart; those least of all, when she thinks of Azshara.
But he still cares — and if it is enough for her to forsake her place in death, there is never any question she would follow him in whatever cause he saw fit to fight for. Even for this planet; even for people she cared naught for.
One of her hands plays idly with his hair, looking at him as Illidan speaks. He doesn't need her, Vashj is certain; not with the amount of power he possesses now. Yet never had she doubted her presence was dearly wanted, otherwise he would not have gone through all the trouble he faced to return her to the world of the living, to his side. Throughout millennia, the changes had been many; yet even death had held no power to sever her loyalty to him. If Illidan needs reassurance there is one person in existence who shall always have his back, then by all means she would provide it.
Another of her hands rests upon his chest, a third reaching to cup his face. "I am with you, no matter what comes. As I was before, as I will always be. That will never change."
The fire in her eyes does not lie — her devotion does not come in half-measures. "If I had to lay down my life for you again, you know I would, without hesitation, Illidan. I do not regret that, only that I failed you."
no but honestly??? being very very honest??? i think vashj actually cared SO MUCH for her two boyfriends. i think she was actually sympathetic to their plights (which is more visible with kael, and sure, she was on a mission to gain his friendship but i think her offers of help were genuine. the only fake part was if she was doing whatever she wanted she'd just straight up murder the human being a bitch to elves <3) but it's also true with illidan. i mean she does personally hate malfurion and tyrande way before that, but what they did to him leaving him imprisoned like that is terrible and the way they still act like they have some sort of moral highground towards other people just pises her off. she despises them. i think the only reason she wouldn't have gone for murder (again) is illidan not wanting her to. because disliking them for getting in the way of plans and acting like they're better because they didn't need magic and lacked ambition was petty hatred, but once she is loyal to illidan she hates their guts for real. maiev is obviously included too, as would be anyone who fucked with kael too.
she is 100% the type of person who takes the side of the people she loves to the point she probably hates people for them more than they themselves do. and also i think the black temple trio worked so well together because they were all different types of fucked up

Sometimes, I remember what Lady Vashj looked like before being turning into a Naga, and I
it's the fact she knows him so well and even though he was kinda dead for a time, when this is said she is actually 100% right

no! vashj embraced that transformation fully, so it's one of the few things i think she does not resent azshara for doing. ultimately, it allowed them to survive - but, as she says in sl, her time as naga also allowed her to be seen and acknowledged for more than her beauty, something that is deeply meaningful to her. as kaldorei, all she was seen for was being beautiful. as a naga, she was seen for her strength and cunning and resolve.
i don't think she was happy from the start. she was likely bitter, at first. but ultimately she came to appreciate her new form. if azshara didn't make that deal, they'd have all died, and she wouldn't even have gotten to live free of azshara's own influence. her end wasn't the better, but she does appreciate her time in outland and as part of illidan's forces, something that wouldn't happen if they weren't turned.
but even though azshara sold them out, i think it's pretty clear vashj never held any regard or respect or willingness to serve the old gods themselves. she remained as a servant of azshara - until she finally left her behind as well. if anything, i feel vashj would resent azshara more for being stupid and vain enough to force them to stay in the palace when that was a death sentence, as well as all the other atrocities she may have done in their life before. the deal that ended up with them turned into naga is one of the things she'd resent the less (although, surely enough, despite coming to appreciate her new form, vashj would never have been happy about the fact that was never her choice).

her actions are sometimes thought of as/suggested to be ambition and jealousy and envy but i think that's not? everything there is? she genuinely seems to care for azshara, to the point when everyone is peacing out she's the one who reaches for the queen to be like miss we have to get out of here or we'll die when the well shenanigans are going down — and when she reaches for azshara's arm in the middle of that the queen is pissed off that she was touched at all and she hits vashj there just like that
Vashj still tugged on her arm. Azshara’s infinite patience had its limits. She suddenly slapped her lady-in-waiting.
and everyone stops, vashj included, even though they're going to die for staying there. the one act is enough to force her into submission again, and when she orders them to prepare for sargeras' arrival, vashj acquiesces.
To emphasize her point, she strode to one of her chairs. The first tremor had toppled it over, but Vashj quickly righted it, then dusted off the seat with the hem of her own garment.
and i just think that was probably standard, as in, you either stayed on azshara's good graces or you suffered for it, and it's not just envying tyrande that leads to her attack - it's self-preservation, too, because she holds the highest position among the queen's handmaidens. it's knowing holding the queen's favor not only gives her privilege, but also feeling it keeps her safe, that azshara's approval keeps her safe. it's as much survival as it is ambition.
idk where i'm going with this, it just struck me that, much like most abusive relationships, it takes a lot for vashj to leave it behind, and she needs to be away from azshara for long enough to really be able to break that bond. but when she does it's really no wonder she becomes so devoted to illidan. whatever else he does, in her eyes she sees a far better leader, one that's really worth following - and who doesn't have to use his impressive force to make himself needed as azshara did.

OH HOW HE CERTAINLY DID NOT AGE. she does not look his way. if she did . . . he had paid it no mind, knowing that her face was scrunched into that of disgust, knowing that her thoughts of an old friend had turned venomous . . . yet he certainly could not blame her, EVER. kael'thas is the first to speak, however, " it's been awhile. " but memories remain, refreshed. THE BETRAYAL OF THE SUN KING. " i would ask if you've been well but it seems we've both met our untimely demise—i—you look nice. She thinks of when they first met, Kael'thas desperate after the losses of his people, suffering under the yoke of prejudice. There had been something vulnerable in him, then, and Vashj can almost see it again, now. What sympathy it had earned the prince before, however, she keeps locked tight in her chest (her mistakes were plenty, but let it not be said no lessons were learned from them).
There is almost pity, for the fate he had found here; almost. Being with him again is reopening the wound of his betrayal. There is a distinct lack of gold in his garments, now, and even the gold of his hair faded, just as red replaced the fel green that shone in his eyes. But physical change meant nothing, and her gaze is hard upon him, though her expression otherwise betrays nothing.
It should be answer enough that she does not return his smile, even out of politeness. "Untimely, perhaps, though I do not regret dying for the cause of one I believed in. Can you say the same, Kael?" If the shortened version of his name is a slip, Vashj tries to not let it show (but it is said with familiarity and the hint of melancholia for what was and is no longer).
"You can't remember much about me at all, it seems, if you think compliments to my appearance would move me in the slightest." She should be forgiven the venom in her reply: there is plenty of reason to resent and little to forgive. Besides, beauty was not the reason she chose to remain in this form (what had beauty ever availed her in life?). "Death certainly has a way to put things in perspective, nonetheless. And so does Revendreth, from what I heard of it." Tell, then, little prince. Have you learned anything at all from when last we met?
i'm talking a lot about illidan but she'd care so much for kael too. and i think that's just. the way she is. people who fucked with kael would also be on her shitlist (until he betrayed them, that is)
she really would be the president of the malfurion and tyrande hate club........ like. even before being a naga.....

"I could tell you the same, if I didn't think you already took it into your hands to pursue better," She knows the story, perhaps better than most (a privileged seat beside Azshara allowed one to know many things, and what befell him was no secret between what had been their people, once). Vashj had been there when he impressed the court with magic skill, just as she had been there when he was made to embrace Sargeras' power, or when he revealed his duplicity, always having sought to keep Azeroth safe from the demons' grasp.
She had not been so noble. The endless pursuit for power and strength made her walk willingly into Azshara's trap — fight to keep her place in the twisted web, even. There's a clarity that comes from being so distant from her, from the empire she built beneath the waves. The Queen had sent her as a spy and an assassin, should the need arise. Yet when the time came to choose, it had not been Azshara she fought for.
"She has... an allure —" He may have felt it, in his time near her. Even now, free from the shackles she had chosen to wear, a sigh escapes Vashj at the thought. "It isn't easy to deny her. But I have no intention of returning, if that troubles you still."
"My loyalty to Azshara was set aside the moment I and mine aided you in reaching the Broken Isles, my lord." A slight tilt of head, as a hand moves to support her chin, another pair of arms crossed. There is more than interest in her gaze; an intriguing person alone would not have caused her to risk so much. Whether he believes it or not, Illidan has earned her sincere loyalty. "I know my worth, and I see yours, as well."

but i also think part of why she embraces who she is as a naga and of her loyalty to illidan is bc while with him and perhaps particularly in outland, that's the first time in at least a considerable part of her life that she's? more than a beautiful tool for azshara to use as she sees fit? and before the sundering so much depended on having the queen's approval, that even beyond azshara's magic there'd be a lot of pressure on vashj (pressure she pushed on herself too) to do anything to keep her favor once she got it, her feelings or her very sense of self irrelevant in comparison to just. Keeping Azshara's Favor. i doubt much changed when they were transformed, considering nazjatar was built by the same empress, served by the same highborne who worshipped the ground she walks on. but vashj was there to see azshara defeated, and she saw her queen become a servant to an old god (regardless of the title she holds; maybe she's no slave, but she's not free or above nzoth either). that in itself breaks the hold a little, because strength is definitely something vashj values (and there's no shame in serving, so long as that is a willing choice and not something forced on you you're not strong enough to fight, as is azshara's case in her eyes). being sent away, and her time around illidan only furthers that distance while her admiration for him grows. her loyalty is met with loyalty (the fact illidan gave her one of the vials with water from the well of eternity???? i cry). there's no going insane with the desperate need to do anything to keep his favor. he is fighting for his own cause, and even if he loses along the way, he's not selling all of them to a higher power that'll make them slaves to keep a crown. this is senseless rambling i'm just thinking about how her life was for azshara for a long time, since she was very young, and how she was only really capable of turning her back to all that bc of illidan too
